This sheet is signed Hiroshige hitsu. For a similar impression in the collection of the National Museum in Crakow, Centre of Japanese Art and Technology Manggha Krakow, see Zofia Alber, eds. Hiroshige : an exhibition of woodblock prints to mark the 200th anniversary of the artist’s birth (Krakow: National Museum in Crakow, 1997), no. And the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. This is a rare opportunity to add this woodblock to your collection at a great price. The sheet measures about 14 5/8 inches tall by 10 inches wide. Condition: The print is in good shape for its age. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 – 1858) “Haneda Ferry & Benten Shrine” Series: 100 Famous Views of Edo Publisher: Shitaya Uo Ei Woodblock Print 13 7/8 x 9 1/4 inches (trimmed margins) 13 1/4 x 8 7/8 inches (image) Signed: Hiroshige-ga Date: 8th Month of 1858. This woodblock entitled “Haneda Ferry and Benten Shrine” by Hiroshige is an absolute fabulous example of the rare print. Having never been displayed and stored flat its entire life the original color is visually striking with its deep reds, blue and green color that this composition is mostly composed of. This woodblock is executed on hand laid paper and adhered down to a thin paper via tacked in the top right and lower right corner. The images provided accurately represent the quality, condition and aesthetic beauty of this incredibly rare Hiroshige woodblock print. This print shows the interesting viewpoint of the passenger of the ferry heading south from the village of Haneda as indicated by the parasol in the lower right. Their are some mixed feelings about the ferry mans hairy arms and legs being shown but I personally love the stylized choice which separates it from the majority. The condition overall is excellent with just one small repair to a worm hole as seen in the lower left corner that entered into the figures leg.
