Original Japanese Woodblock, Hiyoshi Mamoru Cormorant Fishing, mid 20th c

Original Japanese Woodblock, Hiyoshi Mamoru Cormorant Fishing, mid 20th c

Original Japanese Woodblock, Hiyoshi Mamoru Cormorant Fishing, mid 20th c

Hiyoshi Mamoru (active in 1950′s). Cormorant Fishing on the Nagara River. Dimensions: 16.25″ x 11.5″. Circa : mid 20th c. This is, in my opinion, a very nice print to add to a collection. Condition is excellent, no tears, no foxing, and no repairs. Colors are great; very vibrant. Very good registration, fine graphic impression and good, bold bleed-through. Overall, very little toning and no matt burn, full margins and deckled edges with printing ink as is normal with m. Handmade woodblocks and some minor creasing in the margins. Please note chop/stamp on lower left verso… I believe that is the printers mark. If the item is not paid for within this time frame, it may be resold. More pictures available on request. It is a genuine vintage Japanese woodblock print. However, please note that this item is not accompanied by a certificate of authenticity or any other source verifying its authenticity. ARAI YOSHIMUNE A Fishing Boat antique Japanese Woodblock Print

ARAI YOSHIMUNE A Fishing Boat antique Japanese Woodblock Print

Arai Yoshimune was a Japanese artist associated with the shin-hanga (“New Prints”) art movement in Japan during the early 20th century. This movement was influenced by European Impressionism and its imagery focused on landscapes, women, and nature. In the 1920s, the publisher Hasegawa commissioned a small group of artists to create woodblock prints for a series entitled ” Hasegawa’s Night Scenes “, of which there were a total of 21 prints by 6 artists. The scene makes heavy use of dark blue and darker blue shadows to convey the night and objects within the night. Under a bridge overpass, a solitary fisherman in his boat hauls in his net by the light of a torch, whose light ripples on the water. We see the silhouettes of people going about their late-night business above, in the distance we see the light of a house? On lands further out on the river. Unfortunately the original matting was not acid-free, so while the colors are still rich, there is discoloration from where the matting overlapped the printed section of the piece. This discoloration is noticeable up close, but not noticeable from any realistic distance or once the piece is behind glass. Light residue in the reverse top corners from where it was tipped to the folio. After his father’s death he was adopted by the Arai family. He succeeded his father in 1882 to become Yoshimune II and occasionally used his fathers art name Isshsai, along with the name Arai Yoshimune. Worked as illustrator and print designer. Also known as Arai Toshiyuki. The item “ARAI YOSHIMUNE A Fishing Boat antique Japanese Woodblock Print” is in sale since Thursday, October 15, 2020. RARE Takahashi Shotei Japanese Woodblock Print Pre-1923 Pre Quake NIGHT FISHING

RARE Takahashi Shotei Japanese Woodblock Print Pre-1923 Pre Quake NIGHT FISHING

RARE Takahashi Shotei Japanese Woodblock Print Pre-1923 Pre Quake NIGHT FISHING

RARE Takahashi Shotei Japanese Woodblock Print Pre-1923 Pre Quake NIGHT FISHING

It is called Night Fishing and it is a PRE earthquake print. It is from before 1923. It has the Shotei name seal and a very rare Watanabe 5-petal seal with the number “3″ in Japanese. This is an early inventory number of Watanabe Publishing. I had some help on this print from the owner of Shotei website (easy enough to find). After seeing this print he added a note to his website that reads: Pre-quake version of M-2. A copy of this print has been found with an early Watanabe 5-petal cartouche containing the number’3′ just below the artist’s seal. He added this after seeing photos of this print that I sent him. It sounds like this could be the first one like this seen. I know for sure this is a pre quake print but I do not know the exact date. I’m guessing that it is 1920 or before as in 1921 he started using Hiroaki as his signature. The print he shows is not my print he just added the info from my seal mark that hasn’t been seen before. The print is in excellent condition and measures 14 7/8″ x 6.75″ (37.8cm x 17.2cm). It is not often that a pre-quake print by Shotei comes up. A super piece for any collection.
