LARGE LIMITED EDITION SIGNED JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINT. By KATSUYUKI NISHIJIMA DAY OF SNOWING. This Large Limited Edition Japanese Woodblock Print is by Famous Artist Katsuyuki Nishijima. It is Signed , Numbered and is Titled Day of Snow. Katsuyuki Nishijima was born in 1945 in Yamaguchi Province of Japan. From 1964 to 1968 he studied the art of Woodblock Prints in the studio of the Mikumo publishing house in Kyoto as well as exhibiting his work with the Kyoto independent artists and in solo displays. From 1972 he focused his immense talents on limited edition woodblocks using traditional old buildings as his main subject matter. Katsuyuki Nishijima’s woodblocks come in a number of formats and the larger sizes are limited editions of usually 500, all hand signed, titled and numbered but normally never dated. He has also produced a number of open edition woodblocks since the mid 1970s which are hand signed and titled and again not dated. Japanese woodblock print on handmade washi paper. Hand signed in pencil with artist stamp9/180 Circa 1980′s. Ido was born in North-East China in 1945 and his family moved to Japan in 1946 finally settling in Kyoto in 1959 where he lived and worked until his recent death in 2016. Ido studied in Kyoto with Yoshida Koho (fabric dyeing) and Otsubo Shigechika (woodblock prints), and belonged to the top group of established contemporary Japanese artists. His works are in the collections of the New York Modern Art Museum, the Boston Art Museum, the Kyoto National Museum, the Tokyo National Museum, the Florence Municipal Museum and in many private collections. Masao Ido hosted a Japanese television show about making woodblock prints on the NKK network and was frequently interviewed by Japanese news sources as an expert on the subject. The artist’s black ink signature and red seal are at the lower right corner of the image. Vintage post-war edition with the round Watanabe 6mm publishers seal at the lower right corner. It is not a recent Heisei edition. Paper size: 15 3/16″ x 10 3/8″ (image measures nearly 14 1/4″ x just under 9 1/2″). Very good overall condition. There is a barely visible small repaired tear in the ground at the lower left and there are some adhesive-type stains scattered on the back. A color illustration of this image can be found on page 517, plate 445 of Volume 2 of “Kawase Hasui: The Complete Woodblock Prints” by Kendall H. Brown, Hotei Publishing, 2003.
