LIMITED EDITION JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINT by. Hand Signed, Titled, Dated and Numbered All in Pencil by the Artist. DATE: 1998 NUMBER: 203 of ONLY 300 ever created. SIZE: 30.5cm x 23.5cm (12 inches X 9.5 inches). SEIJI SANO was born in Iwata in Shizuoka Prefecture in 1959. He moved to Kyoto in 1978 and studied with textile designer Sano Takeshi. In 1984 he began studying woodblock printing with Ido Masao, one of Japans top contemporary artists. Sanos beautiful woodblock landscapes focus on the natural beauty of the countryside around Kyoto and display an instinctive feel for colour and form that is very rare among the artists of his era. All of his fabulous woodblock scenes are hand signed, dated, titled and numbered limited editions of mostly small amounts often only up to 100 but some extra fine prints up to 300. He is one of todays successful artists who live and work in Kyoto and his favorite subject is the beauty of old Japan. Sano Seiji combines the woodblock technique and romantic subjects in a masterly way. The results are images with a touch of impressionism. First edition impression with “jizure” (self-printed) seal in the upper left margin. The artist’s black ink brush signature and red seal is at the lower right and the print is pencil-signed in the lower right margin. Illustrated in “The Complete Woodblock Prints of Yoshida Hiroshi, ” Abe Publications, color plate #38 (page 56). Paper measures 15 7/8″ x 10 1/2″ (image size: 14 1/2″ x nearly 9 5/8″). Generally very good overall condition with full margins. The print is faded and fade line is evident around the edges of the image. The top back margin edge has old tape and tape residue adhering which causes the print to be slightly wavy at the top. This print is from a Fountain Hills, Arizona collection. One of the most famous of all Ukiyo-e images! The subjects of Hiroshiges work were atypical of the ukiyo-e genre. However, Hiroshige is best known for his landscapes and images of birds and flowers. In fact Hiroshiges genius for landscape composition was even recognized, and sometimes copied, by the great European Impressionist painters such as Vincent Van Gogh. From the 1896 edition of Hiroshiges famous series the 53 Stations of the Tkaid. Travelers struggle against the force of a driving rainstorm. This is one of the most famous of all Japanese woodblock prints and is a Hiroshige masterwork. Would be absolutely spectacular displayed in your home or office.
