First edition impression with “jizure” (self-printed) seal in the upper left margin. The artist’s black ink brush signature and red seal is at the lower right and the print is pencil-signed in the lower right margin. Illustrated in “The Complete Woodblock Prints of Yoshida Hiroshi, ” Abe Publications, color plate #38 (page 56). Paper measures 15 7/8″ x 10 1/2″ (image size: 14 1/2″ x nearly 9 5/8″). Generally very good overall condition with full margins. The print is faded and fade line is evident around the edges of the image. The top back margin edge has old tape and tape residue adhering which causes the print to be slightly wavy at the top. This print is from a Fountain Hills, Arizona collection. One of the most famous of all Ukiyo-e images! The subjects of Hiroshiges work were atypical of the ukiyo-e genre. However, Hiroshige is best known for his landscapes and images of birds and flowers. In fact Hiroshiges genius for landscape composition was even recognized, and sometimes copied, by the great European Impressionist painters such as Vincent Van Gogh. From the 1896 edition of Hiroshiges famous series the 53 Stations of the Tkaid. Travelers struggle against the force of a driving rainstorm. This is one of the most famous of all Japanese woodblock prints and is a Hiroshige masterwork. Would be absolutely spectacular displayed in your home or office. LARGE LIMITED EDITION SIGNED JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINT. By KATSUYUKI NISHIJIMA DAY OF SNOWING. This Large Limited Edition Japanese Woodblock Print is by Famous Artist Katsuyuki Nishijima. It is Signed , Numbered and is Titled Day of Snow. Katsuyuki Nishijima was born in 1945 in Yamaguchi Province of Japan. From 1964 to 1968 he studied the art of Woodblock Prints in the studio of the Mikumo publishing house in Kyoto as well as exhibiting his work with the Kyoto independent artists and in solo displays. From 1972 he focused his immense talents on limited edition woodblocks using traditional old buildings as his main subject matter. Katsuyuki Nishijima’s woodblocks come in a number of formats and the larger sizes are limited editions of usually 500, all hand signed, titled and numbered but normally never dated. He has also produced a number of open edition woodblocks since the mid 1970s which are hand signed and titled and again not dated. Japanese woodblock print on handmade washi paper. Hand signed in pencil with artist stamp9/180 Circa 1980′s. Ido was born in North-East China in 1945 and his family moved to Japan in 1946 finally settling in Kyoto in 1959 where he lived and worked until his recent death in 2016. Ido studied in Kyoto with Yoshida Koho (fabric dyeing) and Otsubo Shigechika (woodblock prints), and belonged to the top group of established contemporary Japanese artists. His works are in the collections of the New York Modern Art Museum, the Boston Art Museum, the Kyoto National Museum, the Tokyo National Museum, the Florence Municipal Museum and in many private collections. Masao Ido hosted a Japanese television show about making woodblock prints on the NKK network and was frequently interviewed by Japanese news sources as an expert on the subject.
