Additional prints combined for free. 1833 6 February 1904, also known as or Ochiai Yoshiiku? Born the son of teahouse proprietor Asakusa Tamichi in 1833, Yoshiiku became a student of ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi toward the end of the 1840s. His earliest known work dates to 1852 when he provided the backgrounds to some actor prints by his master. Yoshiiku’s earliest works were portraits of actors, beuaties, and warriors. He later followed Kuniyoshi into making satirical and humorous pieces, and became the leading name in the field after Kuniyosh’s death in 1861. He illustrated the Tokyo Nichi Nichi Shimbun (“Tokyo Daily News”) from 1874 to 1876, and then co-founded the Tokyo E-iri Shinbun (“Tokyo Illustrated News”). He struggled during his last years, and his last known print appeared in 1903. His three known students, Ikumura, Ikuei, and Ikumasa, failed to achieve recognition. Yoshiiku had ten children with his second wife, only one of whom survived childhood. Yoshiiku died at age 71 in a temporary residence on 6 February 1904 in Honjo. He was buried at Anseiji temple in Asakusa and given the posthumous Buddhist name Juzen’in Hkinikkaku Koji. Was a designer of ukiyo-e. And an illustrator of books and newspapers who was active from about 1850 to about 1880. He was born in Edo. (modern Tokyo), but neither his date of birth nor date of death is known. He was the oldest pupil of Utagawa Kuniyoshi. Who excelled in prints of warriors, kabuki. Actors, beautiful women, and foreigners Yokohama-e. He may not have seen any of the foreign scenes he depicted. Yoshitora was prolific: he produced over 60 print series and illustrated over 100 books. In 1849 he produced an irreverent print called Dke musha: Miyo no wakamochi (“Funny WarriorsOur Ruler’s New Year’s Rice Cakes”), which depicts Oda Nobunaga. Rice cakes for the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. A poem by Sawaya Kkichi accompanies it, reading “Kimi ga yo wo tsuki katametari haru no mochi” (“Tamping down the reign firm and solid like spring rice cakes”). Censors interpreted the print as a criticism of authority and had Yoshitora manacles for fifty days. Soon after Yoshitora was expelled from Kuniyoshi’s studio, possibly due to the print, but he continued to produce illustrations prolifically. From the 1860s Yoshitora produced Yokohama-e pictures of foreigners amid rapid modernization that came to Japan after the country was opened to trade. He collaborated on a number of landscape series, and in the Meiji period. That began in 1868 he also worked in newspapers. The last of his known works appeared in 1882. Print Size : OBAN Large size. Actors Kawarazaki Gonjûrô I as Yahei Hyôe Munekiyo (R). Sawamura Tanosuke III as Tokiwa Gozen (L). By Utagawa Toyokuni III (Kunisada). ; 1786 12 January 1865 was the most popular, prolific and financially successful designer of. In his own time, his reputation far exceeded that of his contemporaries. At the end of the Edo period. (16031867), Hiroshige, Kuniyoshi and Kunisada were the three best representatives of the Japanese color woodcut in Edo capital city of Japan, now Tokyo. However, among European and American collectors of Japanese prints, beginning in the late 19th and early 20th century, all three of these artists were actually regarded as rather inferior to the greats of classical ukiyo-e, and therefore as having contributed considerably to the downfall of their art. For this reason, some referred to their works as “decadent”. Beginning in the 1930s and 1970s, respectively, the works of Hiroshige and Kuniyoshi were submitted to a re-evaluation, and these two are now counted among the masters of their art. Thus, from Kunisada alone was withheld, for a long time, the acknowledgment which is due to him. With a few exceptions, such as actor portraits yakusha-e. And portraits of beautiful women bijin-ga. , at the beginning of his career, and some series of large-size actor head-portraits near the end, it was thought that he had produced only inferior works. It was not until the early 1990s, with the appearance of Jan van Doesburg’s overview of the artistic development of Kunisada, and Sebastian Izzard’s extensive study of his work, that this picture began to change, with Kunisada more clearly revealed as one of the “giants” of the Japanese print that he was.
