Title: “Battle of Sclunotani Diptych” or “Evening Glow at Yashima” Yashima no sekishô, ???? Series: Selection for the Eight Views Mitate hakkei, ???? Medium: Original, Hand-Color Woodblock print from 1846, vintage and life-time impressions. Signature: Signed with the Artist’s chop. Description: Benkei looking through a telescope (left) and the fan on the pole at the Battle of Yashima. Part of Kuniyoshi’s famed Warrior dyptychs. Reference: Robinson – T179; see the Kuniyoshi Project on line for a complete catalogue raisonne. Additional photo used (shown last) courtesy of. Louise Ariëns Kappers and C. Van der Peet and the Kuniyoshi Project. 100% Japanese genuine & authentic original Ukiyo-e Color Woodblock. Print from 1846; good color and a fine impression. Provenance: Ronin Gallery; Hatay Stratton Fine Art, Northampton, Massachusettes. The son of silk dyer, Kuniyoshi Utagawa was born into the Igusa family in Edo. Little is known about his very early years, though he is said to have shown remarkable talent from a young age. Kuniyoshi began his ukiyo-e career as a pupil of Shunei. At age 14 he was accepted to study the art of woodblock printing under Toyokuni I and, in time, would become one of his most successful students. In 1814, he left Toyokuni’s studio to pursue a career as an independent Japanese ukiyo-e artist. However, his fortunes changed in 1827 with his dramatic series 108 Heroes of the Suikoden. From that point on, the public hungered for his portrayals of famous samurai and legendary heroes. Kuniyoshi worked in all genres, producing some brilliant landscapes and charming bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women). He died in the spring of 1861 from complications of a stroke. In direct contrast to the peaceful views of a scenic Japan provided by Hiroshige and Hokusai, the following decades saw a rise of the fierce, fearsome and fantastical in ukiyo-e. Kuniyoshi welcomed this changing public taste. He had a ravenous imagination and the full scope of his work reveals an aesthetic sensibility capable of assimilating almost any experience. No doubt, however, his particular genius felt most at home in the world of martial glory, where epic battles decided the fate of empires and fierce warriors clashed to the death. His imagery was so popular in his time that he received requests for tattoo designs. This item is in the category “Antiques\Asian Antiques\Japan\Prints”. After becoming an orphan at the age of 13, he began studying with revered artist Utagawa Toyohiro, and at the age of 15, he changed his name to Utagawa Hiroshige. He is best known for his impressive series of landscape woodblock prints. Among his most notable works: Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji, ” circa 1831; “The 55 Stations of the Tokaido, ” circa 1833-34; “Sixty-Nine Stations of the Kiso Road, ” circa 1835; and “One Hundred Views of Edo, circa 1856. He finished “Views of Edo” just two years prior to his death from cholera. Similar to Hokusai, Hiroshige’s artwork appealed to fellow revered artists, including Van Gogh. Thank You for Supporting Us. At twelve she began art instruction under Ferdinand Richardt but it ended abruptly two years later when her father died and her family resettled in San Francisco. Hyde studied briefly at the Art Students League in New York between 1888 and 1889. The following year she departed on a four year sojourn in Europe, which included studying with Franz Skarbina in Berlin, Rafael Collins and Albert Sterner in Paris, and months in Holland and England. In Paris, Hyde met Félix Régamey who introduced her to “loveliness of things Japanese” and this meeting was to have a profound effect on her life and work. Returning to San Francisco, Hyde sought out subjects in Chinatown and produced her first series of color etchings. In 1899, Hyde voyaged to Japan where she became an ardent student of the Japanese language and a student of classical brush painting with an Austrian artist working in Tokyo, and it was from him that she learned the skills of carving wood blocks. She eventually accepted the Japanese system of divided labor and employed Japanese carvers and printers (Shohiro Murate carved her woodcuts for eleven years). Hyde exhibited both nationally and internationally and her work won honors in Japan. Hyde was a member of the Chicago Society of Etchers, the Printmakers Society of California, the Chicago Society of Artists and a life member of the Société de la Grauvre en Couleur. Helen Hyde died on May 13, 1919 in Pasadena, California, where she had undergone another surgery for her cancer. A vast collection of her works are within the confines of the Library of Congress in Washington D. Examples of Hyde’s works can be seen at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D. Japan Edo Illustrated book of flora HONZO ZUFU Color Woodblock print book Vol. HONZO ZUFU (lit The Illustrated Book of Herbalism) Vol. 27: Vine plants (Unlike the modern classification) About 32 pages of fine woodcut printing illustrated encyclopedia. Overall the excellent preservation state far beyond the standard. Therefore, the contents are exactly the same as the 1912 version, but neither the colophon nor the title slip. Iwasaki kanen, the author of this book, was a samurai of shogunate retainer, a man who studied plants for a lifetime. Issuance of the first edition of this book, which was one of the first full-fledged botanical books based on Herbalism in Japan, began in 1830. After that, when the first 6 books were issued in woodcut printing, the funds were depleted, and the subsequent volumes were distributed as manuscripts of reserved production. Distribution of 92 books was complete in 1828, and honzo-zufu was completed. According to the records, the total number of reservations is only 30 sets, and the first edition of this book is almost impossible to obtain. This 1922 version is the whole volume of Honzo-zufu completed by woodcut printing after more than 100 years since the first publishing, and the printing of this book which reproduced perfectly up to delicate neutral colors is highly appreciated. The classification of plants in this book is based on the Chinese herbology book (Compendium of Materia Medica), which Kanen used for reference. Author Writer: Iwasaki kanen Publisher: Honzo-zufu kanko-kai Date: Taisho era (1912) Size : Maximum length 10.23. If you want more look at the Interesting book.
