It is signed and dated 1972. This piece is edition #7 from a run of only 60. The print is professionally framed and matted behind preservation glass. The frame measures 18 3/4 wide x 18 3/4 tall x 7/8 deep. The matte window measures 11 in diameter. Born in Minnesota in 1927, Karhu began drawing at a young age. He studied at the Minneapolis Art School from 1950 to 1952 and shortly after made a permanent move to Japan where he became a leading artist in traditional Japanese woodblock printmaking. Thank you very much for your kind understanding. Japanese Hand Print in frame. Title: A Japanese House. (1927 – 2007) was born in Duluth, Minnesota in 1927. From 1946 to 1948, he lived on an American navy base, in Sasebo, Japan. From 1950 to 1952, Clifton studied at the Minneapolis Art School honing his interests in art. While on this great venture as a missionary, he decided to become an artist by producing watercolors, oil paintings, and Sumi-e works. He would exhibit at local galleries and by doing so, gained an important reputation within the community. In 1961, he won first prize at the Chubu Taiheijo Bijutsu Kyokai Ten (The Middle Pacific Art Group Exhibition). He presented his first exhibition in Gifu prefecture where he resided for some time. Karhu moved to Kyoto, and became highly interested in the woodblock print process. In Kyoto, he would have one of his most successful woodblock print exhibitions, which garnered his name as one of the top artists in Japan. Since then, Clifton has exhibited his prints widely throughout the world, and today has become one of the most successful contemporary woodblock print artists. His prints often depict typical old Japanese houses, temples, rooftops, shops, and old town settings of Kyoto using bold lines, patterns, and strong colors. A beautiful view of many people after a light rain, looking out over a beamed bridge enjoying the beauty around them. Karhu masterfully uses varying hues of rich colors to illustrate and define scenery and the bold and bright umbrellas. Born in Duluth, Minnesota, Clifton Karhu graduated from the Minneapolis School of Art in 1952. He lived in Japan from 1955. He was active as a painter in oil, watercolor and sumi before taking up woodblock prints in the early 1960′s. A member of the Nihon Hanga Kyokai since 1964, Karhu has had many solo shows throughout Japan. Clifton Karhu works have been commissioned by major firms in Japan and Hong Kong and are represented in collections, including Cincinnati; Harvard University; St. Paul, Minnesota and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Karhu’s works from 1983. A beautiful print by the American master print maker who lived in Japan for over 50 years. This limited edition print is signed, dated and numbered (54/100) by the artist. The colors are vibrant and again, striking and would look fabulous in any decor. – I have not found another of this particular print, it is I’m sure rare. The print is matted and framed.
