For your consideration: a rare vintage mid-century (1966) Artist Proof woodblock woodcut by noted Japanese artist Fumio Fujita, depicting abstract motifs (sails) in a round cartouche. One of Japan’s most well-known contemporary sosaku hanga artists, Fumio Fujita, born 1933, studied at the Musashino College of Fine Arts and started creating woodblock prints in 1963. Fujitas prints are all pencil signed and numbered, limited editions. His works have been included in the prestigious Collage Women’s Association of Japan (CWAJ) exhibitions several times. Fujitas works are becoming increasing collectable, especially some of his earlier designs. Fujita 1966 AP (Artist Proof) with with additional Japanese characters Dimensions: The print is 17 1/2″ tall and 13 1/2″ wide. Condition: Excellent vintage condition some minimal signs of wear, mostly to the frame. There are some tiny impurities between the print and the frame, but the print is unstained. The artist: Fumio Fujita was born in Aichi province in 1933. He graduated in 1955 from the renowned Musashino College of Fine Arts. In 1963 Fumio Fujita began to make woodblock prints in moku hanga style – self-carved and self-printed. His main subjects are landscapes with a focus on trees. This subject has become trendy among Japanese printmakers since another artist, Joichi Hoshi, became famous by making practically nothing else but images of trees. Fumio Fujita exhibits regularly with “Kokugakai”, a Japanese printmaker association. He had several solo shows in Tokyo and exhibits every now and then with the prestigious CWAJ print shows (College Women of Japan), which was established by Oliver Statler after world war II. Was born in Japan in 1933 and studied at the Musashino College of Fine Arts and began creating woodblock prints in 1963. He has always tried to maintain a type of minimalist style within the landscape genre, has been very successful and is one of the few present day artists to have been contracted by a major Japanese woodblock publisher at the same time as retaining his independence and so continuing to create woodblocks prints himself. I have for Sale an extremely rare Complete set. Vol 1 – 10 EHON TOYOTOMI KUNKOUKI Original 1st Edition set. Dating to 1857 (Ansei 4) with artwork by Kuniyoshi with upto to 10 illustrations in each Volume. This is the only complete set I have seen for sale, so many of these volumes have been broken up to sell the prints separately so even finding single volumes is hard but all 10 is very rare. This 10 volume set cornicles the life and exploits of Toyotomi Hideyoshi a warlord of the Sengoku period (1536 – 1598) who almost achieved the unification of Japan and end the wars that had been ravaging the Country. Each of the volumes are bound in a pale green Washi with soft rice paper pages. Each book is complete with no missing pages of print or images. There is no worm or moth damage which is rare and the condition is good to fair with the usual wear and stains to the bottom of the pages caused by turning each page. Each volume has different marks and stains Volume 8, 6 has a small bit of burn to a few pages Volume 9 has a very small burn to the edge and volume 3 has a pea size burn which goes through the cover and two pages. Volume 7 has it’s title strip missing and volume 2 and 4 have the bottom bit missing from the title strip. The photos taken have been done at random in each book to try and give an even assessment of condition which does vary from volume to volume and in some books page to page. Some of which are very clean and others showing signs of their age being a bit thin at the bottom of the pages but all the text and images are good and these are amongst the best I have seen. If you would like further photos of any of the volumes please message me. Please look at the photos to judge condition for your self. All of my items are genuine antiques and as such will show signs of age damage; scuffs, marks, scratches and such like. Over the next few months. Will post world wide.
