He was born in Oakland, California in 1879. He studied art at the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art (San Francisco), and at the Partington Art School (San Francisco). Their plan was to stay a year and work for an advertising agency creating material to promote tourism. They fell in love with the islands, and it’s people, and stayed permanently. It is also said to be a treasure house of cultural assets, including caricatures of birds, animals, and people, and a statue of Shonin Myoe. In this work, Masao depicts such a Kosanji temple in a cut-out style. His characteristic green color, also known as “Ido green, ” is well-known and can be seen in part of this work.
