Formal Name: Nagae bijin-zu Elongated picture of a beautiful woman. Author: Torii Kiyonaga. Contents: 2 Wood block print A piece from the 1918 special edition of “Ukiyo-e Ha Gashu”. Originally handwritten on paper. Year of publication: 1918. Size: 68×11cm (26.8×4.3 inch). Ukiyoe-Ha-Gashu is the first complete collection of Ukiyo-e in Japan that systematically contains handwritten Ukiyo-e. The first edition was published in 1906-08 and exhibited at the Japan-England Exposition (1910). The exquisite and luxurious woodblock printing technique, which is said to have required 200 times repeated woodblocks to complete a single print, is considered worthy of special mention in the history of Japanese woodblock printing. Ukiyoe-Ha-Gashu was published in several editions, including the first edition in a limited edition of 200 copies, a top-bound edition, and a standard edition. This is the third edition of the special top-bound edition, and according to the preface to the book, This edition has been further revised and published in response to the requests of enthusiasts. The works and color woodblock prints in this edition are not much different from those in the first limited edition. There are light stains on the paper mat. This item is not new. Title : Tanpotsu Short Hair or Seed Tampopo Edition : Pencil Signed, Artist’s chop mark Dimensions : (Double Oban) Entire piece: 20 inch x 14.75 inch approx. Visible area of the image excluding the matting/border: 14.35 inch x 9.75 inch approx. The print was only recently removed from the frame. Appears that the Japanese framer mounted / pasted the print onto the back matting and sealed the sides. Print has likely been trimmed. Toning / tanning to the print and to the matting. No noticeable foxing spots. Pictures provided were taken under indoor artificial lighting AND outdoor under natural sunlight. Moisture stain visible on front matting lower right hand corner. Board back has some scuffs and abrasions. Matting board is very strong and sturdy. Images and video (if provided) are of the actual item for sale and considered a part of the listing description. Ukiyoe is a genre of Japanese art that flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. Its artists produced woodblock prints and paintings of such subjects as female beauties, kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers, scenes from history and folk tales, travel scenes and landscapes, flora and fauna, and erotica.
