Title Edo Meisho Gonouchi Ueno Umesuke. Date: 1867 (Keio 3). Size: 24.5 x 36 cm. His aliases include Hanacho-rou, Ichiiyinsai, and Toyoharu-rou. After studying under Shunobu Toyohara and creating the original illustrations for hagoita oshie, he was introduced to Kunisada (Toyokuni III). He produced many yakusha oshibu-e (large head paintings of actors) and demonstrated his ability. In his later years, he produced many portraits of actors in the traditional style, often depicting a half of an actor standing alone on a series of three panels. The portrayal of facial features is characteristic of the Hagoita style.

Of all the Japanese printmakers of the late Edo and early Meiji periods, Utagawa Yoshitora Japanese, c. This intriguing print is titled Hara in Suruga Province. It is from Yoshitora’s incredible series Calligraphy and Pictures for the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, c. Dynamic image of attackers being repelled by magical flames conjured up by a samurai warrior. Great detail and vibrant color in this fascinating supernatural scene. A marvelous antique print and a wonderful example of Japanese art from the 1800s. Would be a fine choice for display in your home or office. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image it its collection. Utagawa Yoshitora’s masterworks are in the collections of. Many of the world’s leading museums. Among them are the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago; the British Museum, London ; the Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg, Russia; and the Tokyo National Museum, Tokyo. Utagawa Kuniyoshi was one of the last great masters of the Japanese ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints and painting. This is the right panel of Oyone Magoshichi Taheiji and it is framed and matted under glass. The print is in good condition with wear commensurate with age. As represented by the pictures. Utagawa Kuniyoshi is one of the great ukiyo-e woodblock print masters of the late Edo period in the 19th century, renowned for dynamic and often violent prints of monsters, demons, ghosts, and samurai heroes. As a member of the Utagawa school, Kuniyoshi gained renown for his “warrior prints, ” or musha-e, a genre that is widely credited as a significant influence on modern-day manga comics. His breakthrough series The 108 Heroes of the Popular Suikoden, based on the 14th-century Chinese novel of the same name, catapulted Kuniyoshi to fame in 1827. Kuniyoshi worked across many pictorial genres during his career. His broad range of subjects included landscapes, courtesans, Kabuki actors, cats, and mythical animals. Kuniyoshi’s works can be found in international institutions, and his woodblock prints continue to serve as a source of inspiration for contemporary tattoo artists.
