Chikanobu Toyohara (also known as Chikanobu Yoshu) was a leading woodblock print artist of the Meiji Period. Though trained in Kano school painting from an early age, Chikanobu shifted his attention to ukiyo-e around 1852. He began his printmaking career under the tutelage of Utagawa School masters Kuniyoshi, Kunisada and Kunichika. Back paper is is cautiously opened to reveal the posterboard and access to artwork. This is a work by Kawase Tomoe Sui, one of the leading artists of new prints. Lake Kisaki is one of the three lakes of Nishina in the northern part of Nagano Prefecture, located on the most downstream river. The back of the painting depicts the Ushirotateyama mountain range of the Northern Alps, and the air is extremely calm.
