Detail : a few stains. From a series of paintings of Kabuki dressing rooms. The props depicted with the actors changing costumes and putting on makeup are also interesting. It depicts the hectic yet lively backstage of Kabuki. Toyokuni III was a student of Toyokuni, who called himself Kunisada, but took the name Toyokuni II in Tempo 15. In reality, he was Toyokuni III. Toyokuni III was a pupil of Toyokuni and was named Kunisada, but in 1882 he assumed the name Toyokuni II. He had a reputation for his portrayal of people, especially actors and beauties, and was so powerful and influential that he dominated the Ukiyo-e world at the time.
