Original Paul Jacoulet Japanese Woodblock Print Une Belle de Palaos Orchid Palau

PAUL JACOULET (1896 -1960). Une Belle de Palaos (A Beauty of Palao). Pencil signed with red Mandarin Duck seal. Image size 11 3/4″ wide x 15 1/2″ high. 1935 original Japanese woodblock print, “A Beauty of Palao”, by Paul Jacoulet. While the edition is set at 350, fewer than 275 impressions were made. Size: 18 x 14 ¼ inches. Slight fading from age and display. No tears, foxing or other damage. Problems – Trimmed for framing. Print number (verso) has been trimmed off. Red edge seal (verso) has been trimmed, but is still visible. Front printers seal and title (both on lower right) are intact. Our best guess based on materials and framing techniques is that the print was framed circa 1960. Why the owner and/or framer chose to trim the print without preserving the number and verso red seal is a mystery, and points to ignorance regarding the value of the work. NOTE unlike the other 3 Jacoulet prints we are offering, this one was mounted using Beva film, which was easily removed. Provenance – From a grouping of four works from a Washington DC / San Francisco private collection. Originally framed in a faux bamboo frame under glass. Frame removed for closer examination of the print to determine condition. Backing paper labeled Cohens Picture Shop, 1227 G St NW Washington D. Small label at bottom edge with title. Image depicts a lovely young woman with long, dark hair and sultry eyes. She wears a yellow tropical flower in her hair, and a black choker necklace. She is surrounded by exotic orchids crowned with a red anthurium flower. The South Seas prints were all created from sketches and paintings done between 1929 and 1936. As late as 1959, these early works were being carved to produce new prints. Many were lost because of World War II bombing of Tokyo, making them among the rarest and most desirable of all the artist’s oeuvre. PAUL JACOULET (1896 -1960). Le Chant des Vagues Song of the Waves. Est Carolines, Series – Mullusques. PAUL JACOULET (#32) Woodblock Print, approx. 15 1/2 x 11 7/8 inches. Signed in pencil on lower right above the Good Luck Hammer seal. Image depicts a shirtless young man seated cross legged with a large seashell to his ear. He appears to be listening to the song of the waves, but perhaps also to the distant voice of a friend or lover. Long, delicate eyelashes, with a blue sarong and yellow hibiscus flower in his hair. The flower is most commonly associated with good luck and good fortune, but can also symbolize sunshine and happiness. Pohnpei Island, formerly known as Ponape or Ascension, is an island of the Senyavin Islands which are part of the larger Caroline Islands group in Micronesia. Some fading from age. No tears, foxing or other damage. Problems – Trimmed and mounted on backing board with water soluble adhesive. Print number (verso) and edge seals have been cut away when print was trimmed for framing. Our best guess based on materials and framing techniques is that the print was framed circa 1960. Why the owner and/or framer chose to trim and mount them without preserving the seals is a mystery, and points to ignorance regarding the value of the work. Frame removed for closer examination of the print to determine condition. Backing paper labeled Cohens Picture Shop, 1227 G St NW Washington D. Small label at bottom edge with title. Interesting historical note, Cohens Popular Price Picture Store was located at 1227 G Street NW, the location of the influential art organization WPA Washington Project for the Arts, founded in 1975 by Alice Denney. The building was demolished circa 1982, and is now the location of Maceys department store. According to on-line business records, Cohens was founded in 1908. Please Note: This original Kaoru Kawano color woodblock print still retains its original frame, matting board, and the reverse side paper backing. It looks as though it has never been removed. The image size is approximately fourteen and three quarters inches (14 ¾) in height by nine inches (9) in width. Because this Kawano color woodblock print still retains all of its original matting and framing, it cannot be easily accessed to obtain the dimensions for prints sheet size. However, according to the website for Ohmi Gallery, the format for this particular color woodblock print is known as Oban and the sheet size measures approximately sixteen and three quarters inches (16 ¾) in height by eleven and one half inches (11 ½) in width. To this end, the dimensions of the woodblock print continue underneath the matt board. The overall dimensions of the original black-painted wooden frame are approximately twenty three and one eighth inches (23 1/8) in height by a little over fifteen and one half inches (15 1/2) in width. Signed in pencil in the top left corner Kaoru Kawano along with Kawanos red seal. Condition: This Kaoru Kawano color woodblock print looks to be in excellent and clean condition — absolutely beautiful! The original matting and the reverse side paper backing are also in excellent and clean condition. The original black-painted wooden frame has some small white scuffs and markings on its front side surface areas but is generally very good and clean! And the original paper backing does have a few small punctures located in one area. Provenance: This Kaoru Kawano color woodblock print was recently acquired from an important estate in Carmel, California. Kaoru Kawano was born 1918 in Hokkaido, Japan, and studied at the Kawabata Art School beginning in 1934. He had his first prints accepted by the Japan Print Association in 1944. By the 1950s he began to exhibit more frequently in shows around the world. None of his prints, not even his (apparently early) limited edition prints, are dated. Kawano made effective use of woodgrain patterns for both the background and the body of his subjects, which provide depth and texture. This use of plywood surface textures was characteristic of the works of many’sosaku hanga’ artists. Sosaku hanga’ artists took pride in cutting the blocks and printing their own works. This is in contrast to’shin hanga’ artists who continued to collaborate with professional block cutters and printers. LASTLY, SHOULD THE WORD “EAMES” BE USED IN THE SEARCH TITLE, IT IS THERE FOR THE PURPOSE OF REFERENCING THE MID-CENTURY TIME PERIOD OF THE 1940S THROUGH THE 1970S. 14 THIS ITEM IS BEING OFFERED BY DESIGN REFERENCES — ESTABLISHED BY A FORMER ART MUSEUM CURATOR TURNED BOOKSELLER SPECIALIZING in OUT-OF-PRINT and PERIOD MATERIALS on the PROGRESSIVE IDEAS of MODERNISM and POST-MODERNISM in DECORATIVE ARTS and ARCHITECTURE, INDUSTRIAL and STUDIO ARTS of the 19TH & 20TH CENTURIES. 15 PLEASE — NO REQUESTS FOR PHOTOCOPIES OF THIS ITEM.
