A Japanese woodblock dated circa 1952 by the artist Kasamatsu Shiro titled Snow at Yomeimon Gate, Nikko. The woodblock print is in great condition with the artist’s marks in the lower right-hand corner. It is framed and matted under glass, overall dimensions approximately 20.3” x 15.3”. Dimensions visible inside the mat are approximately 9.1” x 13.9” Please review all images. Born in Tokyo, Shiro began studying art at a young age with the painter Kaburagi Kiyokata. He completed his first woodblock designs for Watanabe Shozaburo in 1919 after the publisher saw his paintings on exhibit. Shiro designed shin-hanga prints for Watanabe for many years, becoming well known for his romantic landscapes of famous landmarks and his scenes of traditional Japanese life. From 1952 to 1960, he created more than one hundred woodblock designs for the Kyoto publisher Unsodo. He also experimented with sosaku hanga or creative prints starting in the late 1950s, carving and printing his own designs. Shiro is regarded as one of the top shin-hanga woodblock print artists in Japan. Striking winter scene of the ornate Yomei Gate at Toshugo Shrine in Nikko, the final resting place of the Tokugawa shoguns. The elaborately carved structure is blanketed with snow as evening falls, the twilight creating shadows in soft blue gray. This is a guaranteed antique and original. (wood block print) by a late Edo c. 1845 era artist, Kunisada. Shunga (erotic prints) were outlawed to produce during the Edo era but were so poplular that all the leading artists created them. This print, unsigned, but attributed to the Edo era artist Kunisada of the Utagawa school, features an enthusiastic patron and geisha fulfilling the height of their passion. This print is two pages of a manga (book size) measuring 8″ x 6 1/4″ — (20 x 16 cm). It has been professionally matted on museum mat. The overall matsize is 12″ by 9″ (30 x 23 cm). The paper this print is made of took over 200 days to make. The paper is made of the inner bark of the gampi (mulberry) tree and made to last virtually indefinitely. Having been recently matted and framed, this print remains in very good condition , crisp with full. Some smudges around faces (see pictures 5 & 6). Pictures 7 & 8 show the full print out of mat from the back showing bleed through of the organic dyes.
