Title:Yagurashita Atari Kyougen. Danshichi Kurobei (actor:Nakamura Shikan)1872. Size:24cm ×35.8cm. Condition:not backed with paper, fine color and impression. Please see photos for details. June 30, 1835 July 1, 1900. Was a Japanese woodblock print artist. Talented as a child, at about thirteen he became a student of Tokyo’s then-leading print maker, Utagawa Kunisada. His deep appreciation and knowledge of kabuki. Drama led to his production primarily of ukiyoe. Actor-prints, which are woodblock prints of kabuki actors and scenes from popular plays of the time. Condition: Excellent condition with no foxing, toning, water damage, rips/tears, creases or any other type of damage to the print; Light waviness to paper which will flatten when framed; Taped to mat verso top (two) and bottom (one). This is a beautiful Kusaki print with great bokashi shading from darker blue at bottom of print to lighter at the top. The effect is that the trees appear to be enveloping in fog. SIGNED HIROSHI YOSHIDA JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINT HIMEJI CASTLE SHIN HANAGA. The first photo shows the print in it’s frame, behind glass. I’ve owned this print for over a decade and long suspected the signatures underneath the matting. To verify it I carefully removed the print. The remaining photos show the bare print, more or less. The framing was not archival, backed by corrugated cardboard. Yellowing and fading of the print are noted. The image measures approx 10″ x 15″. Signature on the bottom field appears to be in pencil and authentic. HIMEJI CASTLE IN THE EVENING is the original title. Estimated to be from around 1920. Japan Print Society Japanese Woodblock Kaoru Kawano Camellia

In 1934 he studied the art of woodblocking at Kawabata Art School and was accepted by the Japan print society because he showed great promise in his earlier works. The great world war temporarilly interrupted his work and his service ended as a prisoner in Siberia. After a hectic period of survival and point war Japan’s disorganization Kawano again was recognized again in 1954 by being awarded the Koguga prize. His creative works and exceptional gift as a artist has been accepted through out the world. His work has been exhibited in New York, Chicago , Seattle and Yugoslavia. In particular his work on denoting young girlhood has given him claim worthy of national recognition in Japan proper. He is a member of the Japan printmaker society.
