TSUCHIYA KOITSU JAPANESE Hand Printed Woodblock Print Nightingale

Tsuchiya Koitsu was born under the name of “Koichi” in Hammamatsu in the Japanese countryside. He went to Tokyo. At the age 15 and had apprentice with Matsuzaki, a engraver who worked for Kobayashi Kiyochika. , an artist famous for his genre scenes and military prints. But instead of staying with the engraver, Koitsu joined Kiyochika’s studio and remained there for 19 years, during which he learned the drawing and the graphic composition. His first prints were about the Sino-Japanese war of 1894. Very in vogue at the time. Then he made lithography and changed the register when he met the publisher Watanabe 1883. During an exhibition commemorating Kiyochika in 1931. The following year, he realized his first print Shin-Hanga (Looking at the cherry blossoms in Gion , Kyoto). He made ten prints for Watanabe, then worked mainly with Doi Teiichi and made a few prints with Kawaguchi & Sakai as well as for Baba Nobuhiko. The prints of Koitsu are mostly landscapes in the lineage of Kiyochika and Kawase Hasui based on a beautiful interpretation of light to express emotions, atmosphere, atmosphere. 36- Fuji from Lake Yamanaka. From the series ; Thirty-six Views of Mt. Like the classic shin hanga masters of the day, Tokuriki designed many woodcuts of landscapes and city views in the traditional manner. Yet he actively promoted sosaku-hanga (creative prints) in Kyoto, which emphasized the artists participation in the entire process of printmaking and the exploration of more modern styles and trends. After WWII Tokuriki set up his own publishing company called Matsukyu and began to teach block-carving to artisans and artists, many of them foreigners. He also wrote extensively on the technique of woodblock carving and printing. He traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe and in the 1960s he opened several exhibitions of his works in major U. Cities such as, New York, Chicago, Cleveland and Pittsburgh. BIOGRAPHY from the AskArt: Hiroshi Yoshida was a leading figure in the’shin hanga’ (or new print) movement. He worked primarily as a painter until his late forties when he became fascinated with woodblock printing. After working with the Watanabe print shop for several years, Yoshida decided to fund his own workshop. Unlike ukiyo-e artists, he was intimately involved in all parts of the printmaking process. He designed the key blocks, chose the colors for the prints, and supervised the printers. In some cases, he even helped to carve the printing blocks. This was unusual, considering the traditional division of labor between designer, carver, and printer at that time. The majority of Yoshida’s prints are richly detailed landscapes, featuring such diverse subjects as the Sphinx, the Taj Mahal, and Mount Rainier. Yoshida travelled frequently, and made sketching and painting trips all around the world. He was an avid mountain climber, and is noted for his depiction of alpine scenes. He also was remarkably skilled at depicting water, with its intricate reflections and complex flow patterns. Yoshida’s prints were very popular with Western collectors, and he was one of the only shin hanga artists to sign and title his prints in English.
