Rare GOYO Japanese Shin-Hanga commemorative woodblock BEAUTY AFTER HER BATH

Rare GOYO Japanese Shin-Hanga commemorative woodblock BEAUTY AFTER HER BATH

Very rare Commemorative print of Hashiguchi Goyo Masterwork. The original blocks for his works were destroyed in the great earthquake of 1923. In the mid-late 20. Century his heirs gave two of Japans finest woodblock printers, Tanseisha and Yuyudo, permission to publish very small limited commemorative editions, perhaps as few as 200 each, This very elegant and lovely print is a work from Tanseishas commemorative edition. Instead of following in the footsteps of the earlier ukiyo-e artists who most often chose their models from the famous courtesans of their time, Goyo preferred of paint the geishas, waitress and maids of his era. Stunning portrait of a nude after her bath. Her delicate skin is beautifully framed by a shimmering silver mica background. This lovely print would be a wonderful choice for the collector and the interior decorator. It would be striking displayed on your home or office wall. This stunning print would be a superb choice for any collector. It was made from meticulously recarved wooden blocks using exactly the same technique and with the same excellent detail and rich color as the original. Later edition prints like this make an exciting addition to your collection and are a wonderful way to decorate at a small fraction of the staggering cost of a first edition print. Matted and framed, this print would make a stunning presentation by itself or as an impressive addition to an arrangement with other prints. It is one you will be proud to display in your home or office and is bound to become a cherished family heirloom. Goyos masterworks are in the collections of many of the worlds great museums. Among them are the Metropolitan Museum of Art , New York; the Museum of Fine Arts , Boston; and the Art Institute of Chicago , Chicago. TITLE: Beauty after her Bath. This is a VERY rare woodblock entitled “Sunset at Morigasaki” which was published by Watanabe Shozaburo in 1932. It has the appropriate “B” seal and is a well made impression. Overall size is approx. The image is about 9-3/8″ x 14-1/4″. No tears or creases, but there is an old deep blue staining at the lower right corner as you can see in the photos. Also, this was matted when I found it, and there is an obvious shadowing where the mat was. We are starting at a very low price because of these issues. Don’t let it get away! Artist in the shin-hanga. Hiroaki Takahashi was born in Tokyo, Japan. As a young artist he assumed the artistic name Shotei. As with many Japanese woodblock artists over his lifetime he signed his work with various names and worked for several publishing companies. After studying art, Shotei and Terazaki Kogyo. Founded the Japan Youth Painting Society in 1889. In 1907, as a successful artist, he was recruited by Shzabur Watanabe. To contribute to the Shin Hanga (“New Prints”) art movement in Japan. Watanabe helped to fulfill the Western demand for Ukiyoe woodblock prints which would be similar to familiar historical masters of that genre, including Hiroshige. In about 1921 Shotei added the artistic name of Hiroaki. In 1923 the Great Kanto earthquake. (and subsequent fire) destroyed Watanabe’s facilities; this included all Shin Hanga woodblocks. Thus, Shotei recreated prior designs destroyed in the Great Kanto earthquake and also continued to produce new woodblocks. He is believed to have died in 1945. Since Watanabe produced artwork for Western collectors there are numerous copies of Shotei woodblocks in Western museums including the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts.
