Rare Ito Shinsui “Cotton Kimono” 1922 Japanese Woodblock Print Dated/Signed NR. I previously had this print listed without knowing the artist. After identification was made the listing was stopped and print removed from the frame. Ito Shinsui Twelve Images of Modern Beauties–Cotton Kimono dated and signed at upper left Shinsui 1922 early spring artist’s red rectangular seal Ito the round publisher’s seal, Watanabe, at lower left corner limited edition seal on reverse side 200 total produced. Ito Shinsui, 1898 – 1972. The publisher Watanabe Shozaburo began publishing woodblock prints by Ito Shinsui when Shinsui was still a student. This print dates from 1922 when Watanabe and Shinsui began production on this series, Twelve Figures of Modern Beauties. The series was issued from June 1922 in editions of 200, with one print released per month and distributed by the Ukiyo-e. I believe this early print in the series is one of the hardest to find. I had a friend translate and he stated The print writing is pretty straight forward, it says that the print is from early summer in 1922 (or the way it is written on the print, year 11 of the Taisho emperor reign), then the artists name is next to it (on the left side — remember they write backwards): Shinsui. Size is 16 13/16″ by 9 7/8″. There are borders on all four sides. Print has some foxing and slight fading from being in a frame and displayed. I have shown the back to show the “bleed through” of the printing process. I had originally listed in the frame and did not know the value until someone alerted me to the fact that it was by Shinsui and was most valuable. I have found the print is in the Collections of the Toledo Museum of Art and The Art Institute of Chicago. Only 200 prints were made of each of the 12 Beauties! She may be called a “new beauty” but that does not mean modern–it just means there is a traditional beauty with ordinary clothing–but the printing styles and techniques were maybe more modern. Please see below for four more pictures and I have shown how the print was originally placed in frame.
