Fuji, the tallest mountain in Japan, has been depicted in ukiyoe prints (Japanese Woodblock Prints), including Hiroshige Utagawa’s “Fuji Sanjurokkei” (“Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji”). Tokuriki was born into a family that worked at the Nishi Honganji Temple in Sakyo-ku, Kyoto, and was mainly engaged in painting. However, influenced by the prints of Ei Kawanishi, he became a creative printmaker who played a role in the Kyoto creative printmaking movement. In 1945, at the end of the war, he established a printmaking research institute. However, he realized the limitations of self-printing and self-releasing creative prints, and worked on both creative prints and new prints made with the cooperation of printers and engravers. Tokuriki’s 36 Views of Mt. Fuji , produced around 1940, is characterized by its dynamic depiction of Mt. Fuji and its surroundings, whereas Hiroshige’s subjects were the suburbs of Edo and famous places with a view of Mt. This Rain at Kiraba (at the base of Mt Fuji). Is one of Tomikichiro’s 36 works in the 36 Views of Mt. Frame: 19.75″ x 15.25″ x 1. Print: 14.5″ x 10.25″. Please send us a message if you need to hold this.
