Toshi Yoshida Woodblock Village of Plums
Author: adminOct 16
This design was originally published in 1951 by the Yoshida Hanga Studio. We are offering a posthumously printed image, made from the original blocks, and acquired directly from the Yoshida family. While it is signed in the block, it still looks like it is pencil signed to an untrained eye. To avoid any misunderstanding, the Yoshida Hanga Studio also included the seal of the printer on the reverse. The image measures 9 3/8 x 14 1/2 inches, plus full margins. The condition is excellent. Up until his father passed away in 1950, Toshi Yoshida primarily produced works that were reminiscent of his father’s landscape prints. His later works include a wide assortment of subjects, styles and techniques. Don’t settle for a giclee or other mechanical reproduction. These woodblock prints are made using the same printing process as the original pencil signed run, under the supervision of the artist’s family and meeting their exacting standards.

Held an exhibition showing the Charm of Minka at Nakago Department Store, Fukushima, 1991Exhibition of sketches at Miharu City, Fukushima. 1993Discontinued woodblock printing so that he would have time to repair the straw-thatched roofs of Minka. Hironaga was entirely self-taught. He began woodblock printing in 1970, using shina benia wood and water based colors. His paper is Ichizen hosho, a fine quality hand-made paper. In 1976, he saw an exhibition of Mr. Kiyoshi Saitos work and he knew immediately that he had found the inspiration he was looking for. He arranged through a friend to meet Mr. Saito and since that time they have met on several occasions to review his work. A friendship developed between the twoHironaga has taken his inspiration from Saitos work and Mr. Saito was proud and supportive of this young artist. When Kappy Hendricks visited Mr Saito at his home in Kamakura, in the 1980s, he apologized for the fact that so few prints were available for sale. He had heard from Mr. Hironaga that Kappy would be visiting Hironaga-san the next day. In the presence of Kappy Hendricks and her assistant, Saito proceeded to telephone Mr. Hironaga to remind him he needed to show her a lot of works. In that moment, the world learned which artist would be Mr. Hironaga refused to join any artists associations or mingle with other artists as he wanted to work freely without any restriction which might encumber his works. His entire goal in life (up to 1993) was to preserve graphically, for his fellowmen, the old historical houses of Japan (Minka) which were and still are rapidly disappearing as Japan continues her technological development. For 32 years, Hironaga traveled throughout the four islands of JapanHonshu, Shikoku, Hokkaido and Kyushusketching scenes of these houses. On such trips, he did 50-60 sketches and from this group he chose two or three from which prints were made. His choice of subject depended on his empathy with the scenehe had no interest in what might become a highly desirable print from the collectors point of view. Consequently, because of his purist attitude, all of his works are unique documents of one of Japans most interesting architectural forms. Antique Edo Era JAPANESE TWO SIDED WOOD CARVED HANGI / Mountain Village Scenery
Author: adminJan 7
An original edo era woodblock of the first four pages from a Japanese book. The first page, (right side of the photos 7 – 11) gives the title, which my very educated Japanese wife could not read. This is older Japanese kanji or more likely older Chinese kanji characters. If anyone can read this we would like to know. Older Japanese woodblock book pages were printed on one sheet of paper then folded over to make two pages. The second page of this book is the left side of the woodblock in photos 7 – 11. This is a full sized page of an intricately carved scene of a village in the mountain. Page three would be the other side of the woodblock (right side photos 1 – 6) And features incredibly small but distinct and readable kanji characters most likely of the story describing what’s happening in the carved illustration. The fourth page would be the left side of photos 1 – 6 and is another intricate carved scene of a village in a mountain. Ood blocks were the only way the Japanese knew to print documents / books or pictures until the late 1800′s. After that they went to movable type and lithographs. Often these woodblocks would be used and then eventually the wood would be planed down and used / carved again for something else. This was because having the right kind of tight grained seasoned Japanese cherry wood was valuable. Consequently there are not a lot of these around, most of them eventually being destroyed. Because most of Japan’s city’s were burned during WW2, this would have resulted in a lot of them disappearing also. Most printing was done in the cities. When these were made a calligrapher would be called to do the writing / design. The wood carvers would then copy that writing / design exactly. (So it would print correctly) These are a work of art and skill. This is a relatively rare item. We have a small personal collection we will be listing. It’s 16 3/4 x 7 3/4 inches (42.5 x 19.5 cm) and 3/4 inch thick (2 cm). TOSHI YOSHIDA Iidabashi Village antique Japanese Woodblock Print
Author: adminNov 15
Beautiful view from the Iidabashi or Iida Bridge of boats along the river in the early morning. A willow tree frames the scene at right and buildings line the opposite embankment. At left, a man climbs a steep wooden plank from his boat up to a warehouse above. A lovely print from early in Toshi Yoshida’s career. The woodblock is in very good condition with fully intact margins and press edges to the paper, all toning relegated to the far margins of the woodblock. Nice subtle coloring throughout, solid lines and registry. Minor tape residue on the verso. Toshi Yoshida was the son of Hiroshi Yoshida, one of the most famous woodblock print artists of the 20th century. He followed the family tradition, and centuries of old Japanese craft, of woodblock printmaking adopting and developing his signature style. His close relationship with his father was instrumental in the pursuit of his art; together, father and son traveled Japan and the globe, examining and sketching people and places around them.
