Toshi Yoshida (1911 – 1995). Toshi Yoshida (1911 – 1995) Bird in Autumn Birds of the Seasons Series Woodblock 27 x 19 inches (frame) 20 x 12 inches (woodblock) Signed low right. Up for sale is a beautiful original woodblock entitled Bird in Autumn by the highly collected 20th-century Japanese printmaker Toshi Yoshida. Depicting this fine little brown and yellow bird resting upon a tree branch decorated with orange and red leaves against a faint brown background makes a wonderfully pleasing image. The level of detail is tremendous from the trees leaves to each feather being visible on the bird. Signed with the artists chop mark low right as well as in the margin this work dates to the late 1970s and is part of a set of four. In absolutely fine condition this woodblock shows no signs of wear or damage but its frame does show scuffs, knicks, and acrylic shows some scratches. Toshi Yoshida was an artist of great breadth and vision. Though known primarily for his woodblock prints, he was also a remarkable painter and illustrator. His artistic style cannot be easily summarized, because he was constantly innovating and pushing the boundaries of the woodblock medium. His work ranges from realistic landscapes to imaginative abstract designs to detailed portraits of animals in their environments. Toshi was part of the second generation of the Yoshida family to work in the woodblock medium. Both his father, Hiroshi Yoshida, and mother, Fujio Yoshida, were artists and printmakers. Toshi first studied the techniques of woodblock printing in his father’s studio, and the subject matter of his earlier prints is reminiscent of Hiroshi’s work. However, there were personality and stylistic differences between Toshi and his father, and this comes through in their artwork. Compared to the misty grandeur of Hiroshi’s perfectly composed prints, Toshi’s early landscapes are more down-to-earth and straightforward. Toshi was masterful at depicting the charm of ordinary Japanese life, particularly in prints like Supper Waggon, Urayasu, and Matsumoto, to name just a few. Occasionally he depicted famous landmarks, but his prints tend to focus on the human element rather than the monumental. More pictures are available!!! Toshi Yoshida Friendly Garden Woodblock Prints – All 3!!! Pine, Bamboo And Plum trees of the Friendly Garden, in beautiful, still in the original frames and matting! These have been in the family for many years and sadly its time for them to come to a new home where they can be displayed and enjoyed! There are in overall wonderful condition, however there a a few light scratches on the acrylic that covers the woodblock, and also some scratches on the wooden frames, all due to being moved and stored around the house over the years, and can be seen in the photos the Plum woodblock print has some tearing of the backing paper of the frame, which can be seen in the photos. These deserve to be enjoyed by someone passionate about Japanese Woodblock, and I can stand to see them not being hung up and enjoyed!! Beautiful, large format triptych depicting a garden with the “Three Friends of Winter, ” pine, bamboo, and plum. The trio of trees symbolizes steadfastness, perseverance, and resilience. At left, a tall pine towers over the garden pond, with stone slabs forming a bridge across the water below. In the center, a cluster of bamboo lines the walkway in from of a house. At right, a plum tree is covered with beautiful pink blossoms and buds, with a few birds perched on the branches. The pond is surrounded with shrubs and trees, with a row of evergreens shaded in blue and snow-capped mountains in the distance. A lovely design, commissioned by the Franklin Mint in 1980 and printed in Toshi Yoshida’s studio in Japan. The only triptych ever created by Toshi Yoshida, this beautiful image is rarely seen on the market and would make an impressive framed presentation. Original Vintage Toshi Yoshida 1954 Autumn in Hakone Museum Woodblock Print. This vibrant Japanese print captures the beautiful view of the entrance & garden of Nikki-den at Hakone Museum in autumn. It is in shin-hanga style. Trees & foliage are warm tones of red, orange , & gold. The visible print is in excellent condition w/ very good color & impression. Toshi Yoshida created this in 1954 & followed in his fathers steps by becoming the most influential artist for Japanese woodblock printing. He signed his full name in pencil & titled it. The frame is wooden & painted gold of front & unpainted on the back. The green velvet in front is faded & marked/rubbed in areas. A nail hole on bottom left from the back has poked through. A nearby bulge feels like another nail from the back. The gold trim under green has loosened on 3 out of the 4 sides. The back lower part of frame has a piece of wood that is loose. I didnt want to fix or wiggle it b/c I didnt want to get near the print. Its a gorgeous print nonetheless!
