The climax of the battle scene in the work of the third Toyokuni depicts five shadow warriors protecting Shingen, each dressed in crimson hakama, with the famous Furinkazan banner fluttering in the background. As you may know, “Furinkazan” comes from Sun Tzu’s The Art of War, which states, Be as swift as the wind, as silent as the forest, as fierce as fire, as unshakable as the mountain. ” This is followed by the phrase, “Tenka Fubu, ” which is often misunderstood to mean “There is no equal to me in the world, but this is not the correct interpretation. “Tenka Fubu” expresses the dignity of human beings by stating that there is nothing more important than the existence of the individual “me” in this world. It implies that each individual’s existence is valuable. Shingen, who was a brilliant ruler, a master of people’s hearts, and the creator of an invincible army, had a unique banner that embodied his leadership qualities.
