Antique Japanese Ukiyoe Woodblock Print. This is a Japanese woodblock print Ukiyoe by Yoshikazu Utagawa. The title of the kanji characters say Tokyo Akasaka Shinmachi. Ukiyoe is a genre of Japanese art that flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. Its artists produced woodblock prints and paintings of such subjects as female beauties, kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers, scenes from history and folk tales, travel scenes and landscapes, flora and fauna, and erotica. Antique Japanese Utagawa Kuniyoshi Ichiyusai Woodblock Print of Samurai. Dimensions: Frame size 12.5″ x 16.5″, Print size 7-5/8″ x 11-1/4″. Condition: Frame has one damage and some light scratches, please see pictures for details. He was born in Edo (present-day Tokyo) and is known for his dynamic and imaginative prints. Kuniyoshi’s works covered a wide range of subjects, including historical scenes, landscapes. He was particularly skilled in depicting warriors and samurai, often creating dramatic and action-packed compositions. Kuniyoshi’s style was characterized by bold lines, vibrant colors, and intricate details. He had a unique ability to capture the essence of his subjects, infusing them with energy and personality. Kuniyoshi’s prints were highly popular during his lifetime and continue to be admired for their technical skill and storytelling abilities.
Listed is a framed, ready to hang, 17 x 21 inch Japanese woodblock print by Hasagawa of the lead actor of the famous Kabuki play “Shibaraku”. His sleeves are embossed. The matching frame makes for a striking image. All matting and taping materials are acid free and of Museum quality. There is a slight discolored spot on the lower left on the mat.
