Wonderfully rich painting album by the well-known artist Kanyosai, also known as Takebe Ryotai and Mokyo. The title of this book is Mokyo Wakan Zatsuga, or Various Pictures in Japanese and Chinese Style by Mokyo. It dates to 1802. Large book includes 22 double-page illustrations, each after a painting by Kanyosai. Themes include Chinese landscapes, Japanese landscapes, studies of flowers, bamboo and rocks. Two of the plates are in the ishizuri-e style white lines on black ground, made by carving the design into the woodblock, rather than leaving it in reserve. 7.25 x 10.5 inch book. About 50+ pages, mostly illustrated, title page, preface and table of contents in front. Original title slip is worn, as are blue paper covers. Light staining and creasing inside.
