PAUL JACOULET (1896 -1960). Le Chant des Vagues Song of the Waves. Est Carolines, Series – Mullusques. PAUL JACOULET (#32) Woodblock Print, approx. 15 1/2 x 11 7/8 inches. Signed in pencil on lower right above the Good Luck Hammer seal. Image depicts a shirtless young man seated cross legged with a large seashell to his ear. He appears to be listening to the song of the waves, but perhaps also to the distant voice of a friend or lover. Long, delicate eyelashes, with a blue sarong and yellow hibiscus flower in his hair. The flower is most commonly associated with good luck and good fortune, but can also symbolize sunshine and happiness. Pohnpei Island, formerly known as Ponape or Ascension, is an island of the Senyavin Islands which are part of the larger Caroline Islands group in Micronesia. Some fading from age. No tears, foxing or other damage. Problems – Trimmed and mounted on backing board with water soluble adhesive. Print number (verso) and edge seals have been cut away when print was trimmed for framing. Our best guess based on materials and framing techniques is that the print was framed circa 1960. Why the owner and/or framer chose to trim and mount them without preserving the seals is a mystery, and points to ignorance regarding the value of the work. Provenance – From a grouping of four works from a Washington DC / San Francisco private collection. Originally framed in a faux bamboo frame under glass. Frame removed for closer examination of the print to determine condition. Backing paper labeled Cohens Picture Shop, 1227 G St NW Washington D. Small label at bottom edge with title. Interesting historical note, Cohens Popular Price Picture Store was located at 1227 G Street NW, the location of the influential art organization WPA Washington Project for the Arts, founded in 1975 by Alice Denney. The building was demolished circa 1982, and is now the location of Maceys department store. According to on-line business records, Cohens was founded in 1908.
