STAMP COLOR WOODBLOCK PRINT OF CRANE, IN ORIGINAL. HARDWOOD, THIN-PROFILE FRAME, W/UNBROKEN. ORIGINAL BROWN PAPER DUST COVER. Japanese Modernist woodblock prints (Showa period). Sta mped on the bottom-right of the face of the print with an original red ink artist’s stamp. It’s also stamped with a black ink gallery stamp on the back brown paper dust cover. The Little Gallery,’ 105 Chestnut Street, Springfield, Massachusetts. 23 ½” Height x 14” Width (Frame). 15 ½” Height x 10 Width (Image). It’s medium-format in size, being nearly 24 inches in height and 14 inches in width. It’s still in its period, vintage hand rubbed, oiled, thin-profile hardwood frame and is under sage green, miter-cut mat board, with its original brown paper back dust cover still intact and unbroken. Pictured is a Minimalist, head and upper torso, side profile of a crane (aquatic bird or saltwater waterfowl) offering only the’essential’ pictorial information needed to describe the fauna. This conceptually reduced artistic treatment of the subject is in keeping with Japanese Modernist art and in particular, color woodblock prints from Japan’s Showa period. It’s spare and economic in its approach and design and uses only reduced, basic geometric shapes and a very limited color palette to describe them. Very, very beautiful in a very, very Minimalist, Japanese way. Gorgeous and completely original. Outstanding and very, very quiet like the very crane it depicts. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE ARTIST. Kaoro Kawano was born in Hokkaido, Japan and studied at the Kawabata Art School beginning in 1934. He was a participant and practitioner during Japan’s’Showa’ period. He had his first color woodblock prints accepted by the Japan Print Association in 1944. By the 1950′s he began to exhibit more frequently in shows around the world. None of his prints, not even his (apparently early) limited edition prints however, are dated. His reputation became international, with successful solo exhibitions in North America and elsewhere. Kawano’s prints frequently depict children and animals, combining Western style elements with the old tradition of woodblock printmaking. Kawano’s works are also appreciated for the way in which they incorporate the grain patterns of the woodblock into the design. Excellent, pristine, nearly immaculate over a ll vint a ge condition. Without blemishes, tears, paper loss, water stains, foxing, tanning or other surface conditions or damage. It’s in its original, thin-profile hardwood frame, is matted and under glass. In really exceptionally well-preserved overall vintage condition. A gorgeous period Japanese Modernist color woodblock print. This is just a great original piece. For those not familiar with the artist I have included his biography below. This is a wonderful modernist view a large group of abstract people standing under umbrellas. A wonderful large color woodcut measuring 9 1/2 x 14 1/4 inches. A good crisp impression. Titled in Japanese lower left, in English lower center and signed in English lower right in pencil. Also has the artist’s initials lower left within the image. I would say some minor consistent toning to the print but really quite faint. Original matte also may have left some faint matte burn but nothing too bad as well. Print is laid down on the backing with the matte laid down over it. Original wood frame is complimentary and ready to hang. Frame measures 13 3/4 x 21 3/4 inches. For those not familiar with the artist, his biography from a gallery that sells the artist’s work reads. TAKEJI ASANO was born in Kyoto in 1900 and lived to 1999. He began a study of art in his youth. In 1919 he graduated from the Kyoto City School of Fine Arts and Crafts and then from the Kyoto City Specialist School of Painting in 1923. Among his Early Teachers was the artist and printmaker Tsuchida Bakusen and Asano helped to organize the Kyoto Creative Print Society (Kyoto Sosaku-Hanga Kyoka) in 1929. In 1930, Takeji Asano along with some other members of the Creative Print Society contributed several designs to a series of prints titled Creative Prints of Twelve Months in new Kyoto (Sosaku-hanga shin Kyoto junikagetsu). Which were published by Uchida. He expanded his skills in print design as well as learning the skills of carving and printing which enabled him to create some self-carved and self-printed series of landscape prints. His main fame came in the 1950s and many of his works have been published by Unsodo. CHECK THE PICTURES ON THIS GREAT PIECE. DONT MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY. If you have any questions regarding the work, please dont hesitate to ask. Pictures are an excellent indication of condition. I guarantee and stand 100% behind everything I sell. Dealsrus is well known for offering quality artwork at reasonable prices. Our reputation is stellar and we stand behind everything we sell. Japanese artist known for his woodblocks, design and paintings. Original signed and stamped limited edition woodblock print. Image: 15.5″x 9.5″ Frame: 22.25″x 16″. Signed and stamped lower left. Looks excellent, in as found original condition, no visible wear, fading or damage, does not appear laid down, not examined out of the frame–please look at photos carefully. Great looking composition by Kiyoshi Saito! With brilliant contrast, this image depicts a stylized portrait of a Japanese female figure carrying a large bundle. Saito was known for his woodblocks and traditional Japanese subjects; this is a fine example of his work in beautiful condition. Born in Fukushima prefecture, Kiyoshi Saito began by designing signs for store fronts in 1924 and developed his work it into a successful business. His love of art inspired him to sell his business and move to Tokyo in 1932. There he studied Western-style painting at the Hongo Painting Institute. While exhibiting his oils, he begun making woodblock prints (Hanga) by cutting and printing progressively from a single block. By 1937 he focused on only making woodblock prints and in 1938 he produced the Winter in Aizu series depicting the area where he lived as a child. In 1943, he met Onchi, which led to membership in the Nihon Hanga Kyokai (Japanese woodblock association). At the end of the war he exhibited with Un-ichi Hiratsuka and Hide Kawanishe in Tokyo. In 1948, he exhibited at the Salon Printemps, and in 1951 received first prize for Steady Gaze at the inaugural Sao Paolo Bienniale. This event brought the modern school of Japanese prints to prominence. Saito was featured in Statler’s, Modern Japanese Print: An Art Reborn (1956), and visited the U. In 1956 under the auspices of the State Department and the Asia Foundation. From that year onward, Saito exhibited widely throughout the U. In 1967 he made a woodblock print of Prime Minister Eisaku Sato for the cover of Time Magazine. In his later years he moved on to figure subjects then to Buddist subjects and the building and culture of Kyoto, influenced by the works of Mondrian. Saito’s prints, with their flat areas of color and solid textures were the result of his search for the essentials of nature. Saito died in 1997 at the conclusion of a major retrospective in Tokyo at the Wako Department Store. Kiyoshi Saito works are in numerous collections including: Cincinnati Art Museum, Philadelphia Museum of Art; Achenbach Foundation for the Graphic Arts, San Francisco; New York Public Library; Art Institute of Chicago; Fukushima Prefectural Museum of Art; Kanagawa Prefectural Museum. 100% Guaranteed to be as described. He was also a teacher at Hiroshima University. Mabuchi is noted for intricate, mosaic-like prints. His modernist prints are exceptional and unusual examples of mid-century Japanese printmaking. This print is signed in pencil in the lower left, dated 1962 lower right, and numbered 14/100 lower center. The print is in good condition though with apparent toning and there is a small tear (appears repaired) at the lower right corner (may be seen in the image with the date).
