Japanese woodblock print on handmade washi paper by Masao Ido, signed in pencil with artist’s stamp 64/150 c. Displayed in wood frame. Ido was born in North-East China in 1945 and his family moved to Japan in 1946 finally settling in Kyoto in 1959 where he lived and worked until his recent death in 2016. Ido studied in Kyoto with Yoshida Koho (fabric dyeing) and Otsubo Shigechika (woodblock prints), and belonged to the top group of established contemporary Japanese artists. His works are in the collections of the New York Modern Art Museum, the Boston Art Museum, the Kyoto National Museum, the Tokyo National Museum, the Florence Municipal Museum and in many private collections. Masao Ido hosted a Japanese television show about making woodblock prints on the NKK network and was frequently interviewed by Japanese news sources as an expert on the subject.
