The 36th Print in 1969 Signed & Numbered Double Sheet Embossing. This is an exceptional embossed woodblock print by Haku Maki. Pencil signed & numbered. Sekai-Do Framed String was replaced with hanging wire. Measures: 20″ x 14″. About the Artist Haku Maki. Haku Maki (1924 2000). Was a Japanese artist of the second half of the 20th century. He first made his name and his living by producing prints featuring Chinese characters (kanji). His life as an artist dates from the mid-1950s, when the earliest known Maki prints began appearing. One of the most prolific Japanese print-makers of his day. Maki began making prints in the late 1950s and continued until 1999. Early on, he developed a system of including the year of production of a print in the prints title. Hence Work Poem 69-36 is the 36th print of 1969. This pattern was used from the early 1960s to about 1980. Makis calligraphic images may be a true kanji, a modified kanji, or a very old Japanese-style kanji or a Maki-created kanji. They may be katakana or a very old calligraphic design Maki discovered and enhanced. Began in 1967 and prints in this series always consisted of at least one character but could have more. It was Makis style to depict a main image with an embossed technique. Normally that central subject is kanji, a persimmon or ceramics. It is produced from a cement block into which Maki carved the images design; the print was created from the cement block. Then Maki added a title and a number identifying the number of the print in the run, then affixed his red seal (chop) and signed off in English in pencil. In his earliest works he used a single sheet of paper but by 1963 he had begun to use a double sheet. This thicker paper made it possible to do better embossed, highly textured works In their heyday Makis prints look sharp and moderneven as the themes are all pre-modern. Thank you for looking! Maki Haku (, 19242000) is the artistic name of Maejima Tadaaki, who was born in Ibaraki Prefecture. He was a ssaku-hanga artist in 20th Century Japan. [1] During World War II, Maejima Tadaaki was trained as a kamikaze pilot in the Japanese air force, but the war ended before he was assigned a mission. [2] Haku had no formal art training, but studied for two years with the ssaku-hanga artist Onchi Kshir (18911955). Two unique qualities of Maki Haku prints are the textures achieved by working the designs in wet cement and the use of Kanji (Chinese characters) as design motifs. [4] In 1962, he started adding texture to his prints. At first, he added texture to the entire sheet after it was printed. In 1965, he began embossing designs into unprinted paper by using a press to transfer a design created in cement on a carved plywood board, and then adding color with stencils. [5][6] He distorted and rearranged the strokes of Chinese characters to produce striking and serene images. For example, Poem 71-91 is a highly stylized representation of the kanji , which is pronounced mu and means nothingness, an important concept in some forms of Buddhism. The artist participated in the Tokyo International Print Biennale in 1957 and 1960. The book Festive Wine: Ancient Japanese Poems from the Kinkafu is a translation of 21 ancient poems called Kinkafu or Music for Wagon Songs. The translation is accompanied by Maki Haku’s prints that were made in 196869. The Art Institute of Chicago, the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Honolulu Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Museum of Modern Art (New York), and the Philadelphia Museum of Art are among the public collections holding prints by Haku Maki[7]. These are remarkable pieces of woodblock art, likely from the 1960s. They are hand signed and numbered by the artist. These are 2 very rare of his early woodblock prints from a limited series entitled “Remain”. Remain D is 2/20 and Remain B is 4/20. From what I can tell, they were in the original frame, glass. And matting, but I temporarily removed from the frame and glass for photos. Please contact me ahead of purchasing if you want to have the frames/glass included. What appears to be the original tape is still in place, at the top of each print only, connecting them to the matting. I took quite a few pictures to indicate the condition of the pieces. I don’t know enough about woodblock prints to know what type of restoration may be desired by a serious collector. I did my best to take helpful photos. Please send me a message and I will be more than happy to send you additional images. There are no tears but there is some discoloration of the paper that doesn’t distract from the beauty of the images to my untrained eye, but a serious collector may want to have restoration done. They are impressive examples measuring approximately 15″ x 24″ (image size), 21″ x 30″ (including matting) and 24″ x 33″ (with optional frames). Please feel free to ask my any questions, or ask for more pictures. I will be glad to give any information about them I can.
