Yuichi hasegawa woodblock print. Limited small edition #2/30. Pencil signed lower right. 11.3 x 8.4 in. In fact it was Saito who brought Hasegawa to attention in the late 1980s saying, There is a guy from my hometown who makes woodblocks like nothing I’ve seen before. You should really take a look. It turned out that Hasegawa’s family made lacquer products and that the artist had used some of the lacquer resin to add a distinctive gleam to the surface of his pieces. He also makes reduction woodblocks. In a reduction print, a single block is used in sequence to print colors in a specific order, usually light to dark. The largest area of color is printed first, then, those areas of color intended to remain are carved away. The next color is rolled onto the same block and printed over the previous color (only those areas that were not carved away will be the newly-layered color). This sequence of carving and printing continues until all the colors have been printed, resulting in a block that has been progressively carved away, or reduced. The edition printed from a reduction block is truly limited because most of the surface of the block has been carved away. Many woodblocks which are printed using a separate block for each color also have a more one-dimensional, “flat” feeling, but the lacquer and the metallic paint that Hasegawa uses lend his work its signature texture. Hasegawa lives in a rural setting; many young people have left for the big cities, looking for jobs. He has taken over an abandoned schoolhouse to use as his atelier. Hasegawa says about his work: For a long time, I have been influenced by the deep spirituality of Zen. I live in the middle of nature and strive to create meaningful works that express the power and splendor of nature. Art Gallery of New South Wales, Australia. Hamburg Museum of Arts and Crafts, Germany. Newark Public Library, New Jersey. Worcester Art Museum, Massachusetts. Federal Reserve Board Art Collection, Washington, DC.

Ansei Uchima 1970s Abstract Woodblock Joy Listed Japanese-American
Author: adminDec 16
The following biography is from the Lavenberg Collection. Uchima, the son of Japanese immigrants, grew up in Los Angeles. In 1940, in accordance with his fathers wishes, he went to Tokyo to study architecture at Waseda University. When Japan entered World War II one year later, Uchima was cut off from home. He soon gravitated to the study of painting, which he pursued under the tutelage of Japanese masters and later on his own. His paintings won awards at the Jiyo Bijutsu Art Association annual exhibitions in 1953 and 1954. Uchima began to experiment with printmaking in Japan in 1957, and his work was immediately successful with collectors in Japan and abroad. That same year he shared an exhibition at the Yoseido Gallery in Tokyo with the sculptor Masayuki Nagare and showed his woodcuts in the Tokyo International Print Triennials in 1957 and 1960. After twenty years of teaching, he was named professor emeritus in 1988. In 1967 he became an adjunct professor of printmaking at Columbia University. Besides having over forty one-person exhibitions in the United States and Japan, he has also been included in numerous group exhibitions worldwide. Uchima’s work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum, and the National Gallery of Art, among many others. This print is signed and dated lower right, numbered 97/200 lower center, and titled lower left. It is in good condition with overall toning of the paper. It measures 18 7/8″ x 13 1/2″ (image size). Junichiro Sekino old Listed Artist Fine Art Japanese WOODBLOCK artwork signed
Author: adminMar 10
The size of the woodblock only is 22 inches high by about 6 inches across. The total paper size comes to 24 3/4 inches by about 9 1/4 inches. The woodblock is signed by the artist in the lower right, it is numbered 166 / 200 in the lower left. The woodblock is printed on Junichiro Sekino water marked paper and has a partial water mark in the lower left. As for condition the piece has some older tape on the back of the paper in the upper right and left corners. The major problem with the woodblock is that is is very water stained on the back in the bottom of the print. The back of the piece has a light brown water stain from when the old brown cardboard that this piece was originally framed in became wet some time ago. The good news is that the staining on the back is not as noticeable on the front as it is on the back. The water stain mainly runs through the black color of the woodblock so it is covered up. You can see some light brown staining in the margins along the bottom. There is also some slight paper wrinkling from the previously wet paper in the bottom center margin. A lot of this light staining and wrinkling would be covered once the piece was matted and if you are a paper restorer you could probably easily clean the work as the paper is quite thick.
