Vintage Japanese Woodblock Print Large Modernist Expressionism Hiroyuki Tajima
Author: adminMay 4
Print paper measures about 25″ x 19″, image size 22″ x 17″. Very light overall tanning, small wrinkle in paper bottom middle near addition numbers. Pencil signed and dated 1971, edition 5 of 50. There will be some tape residue on top margin from hinge mount. Born in Tokyo, Tajima graduated from Nippon University (1932) and in 1934 from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (Western Painting Faculty). He began his career. As a print artist in 1946 but gave it up temporarily in the 1950s to write. In the 1960s and 70s he developed his typical densely pigmented abstract style, which, however, was based on the ideals of East Asian calligraphy, traditional Japanese painting structure, and a sense of space derived partly from his Zen Buddhist beliefs. His abstract prints typically have complex surfaces achieved by building up the block with various materials such as crumpled paper. At this time he also made a living from producing more popular landscape prints under the name of Nagai Kiyoshi. In 1969 he began making prints on canvas using much the same techniques, but soon abandoned this. His prints were particularly promoted by the Red Lantern Shop in Kyoto and most of them can be found illustrated in their periodic English-language catalogues. At the listing I have not researched the artist signatures, so offer them with this knowledge. These are not common, and each one appears to be created by a distinctive, skilled and talented artist. They are also all in need of care and restoration, some apparently were trimmed a bit, some having been affected by silverfish (they are all clean now, having been rescued from poor framing and storage). Please look to see the light spots in some of them which are the gnawed holes caused by these insects. I believe there is a following and enthusiasm for these 5, with collectors understanding that restoration can be accomplished, or that flaws can be acceptable when a print is viewed as special. This example has damage to the lower right corner, losses on one edge, and appears to have been trimmed at the bottom and one edge. There are a couple insect pathways on the left lower edge. It should be noted that these holes are hidden/disguised when there is backing behind the paper. This item is in the category “Antiques\Asian Antiques\Japan\Prints”.
