Beautiful Original Joichi Hoshi Woodblock Print. Signed and dated 1978. Outside wood frame measures 16 1/2″ wide by 13 3/4″ high. Internal silver frame is 11 1/2″ wide and 8 7/8″ high. Total depth is roughly 1 1/4. Woodblock behind glass within silver frame is roughly 7 5/8″ wide and 5 1/4″ high. Overall condition of print is excellent with no signs of wear. Frame shows some wear – please see pictures for more details. Backing has original green paper. Price includes very careful packing within the continental US. He was a prolific printmaker in Japan. This is one of his iconic images. It is a blue bird inside a lime green circle. It is in very good condition. There are 2-3 small particles that are trapped under the glass in the lower right corner. It may need to be taken out of the frame and cleaned. Japanese Woodblock Tree Print (blue). This beautiful woodblock piece was created by Joichi Hoshi in 1973. It depicts a blue shaded tree on gold leaf, with his seal in red in the lower right corner (on the print). It is signed and dated in pencil in the lower right, with the title appearing in Japanese (also in pencil) in the left corner. It sat in a large paper envelope from the day it was acquired by him (in 1981). Since that time it has been framed and on display in our gallery. We do not know the pieces history prior to 1981. This piece is in excellent condition. Inspection of the print under natural light reveals no abnormalities or defects. Blacklight inspection reveals no repair work or alteration to the piece. All photographs taken are high resolution and are generally between 2 and 10 MB in size. Joichi Hoshi (1913 1979) is often referred to as the Father of Japanese tree prints. At the age of 57 he began creating these woodblock prints, he quickly gained notoriety and was often imitated by others looking to follow in his footsteps. Examples of Japanese artists that engaged in this genre were Hajime Namiki (1947 -), Kunio Kaneko (1949 -), Shogo Okamoto (1920 2001) and Fumio Fajita (1933 -). The gold metal frame dimensions are 16 x 12, the matte has gold leaf along the inside edge. Framed and then sealed in Tokyo, by the KAIGADO gallery. Joichi Hoshi – “Father” of Japanese Tree Prints. In the early 1970s the artist began to specialize in images of trees. This is what he is most famous for. Collectors usually pay a 4-digit dollar or Euro amount for a Joichi Hoshi tree print. Japanese art prints showing trees have since then become a fashionable trend. Quite a few artists jumped on the bandwagon and created “tree prints”. The trend continues together with a few more trendy subjects in contemporary Japanese printmaking liking old farmhouses or birds – preferably owls – in all shapes, styles and. Joichi Hoshi had worked as a teacher in Taiwan for 13 years. With the end of world war II the Japanese occupation of Taiwan Taiwan had come to Japan at the end of the Sino-Japanese war of 1894/95. When he graduated he was nearly 50 years old. Later he taught himself woodblock printmaking. For art friends who are familiar with Joichi Hoshi’s works, this is a rather astonishing fact. The artist’s work do not look at all technically challenged. Especially his later tree prints offer a rather intricate and elaborate level of technical craftsmanship, for instance the application of real gold or silver pigments. Joich Hoshi’s international reputation began with his participation in several of the prestigious International Print Biennials of the 1950s and 1960s. He exhibited at the Tokyo International Print Biennials of 1959, 1961 and 1963 and at the International Print Biennal of Sao Paulo (Brazil) in 1967. His work on “Trees” is what made him famous during the 70′s. He died in 1979.
