Offered is a modern woodblock print numbered 2/50 and titled “Country house at Ryakubosi-mura” by Kam Kamada. Actual image size showing is app 10″x17″. Frame measures 16-3/8″x 23-3/8″. However, the frame is backed by a glued on paper so the matted print isn’t going to fall out of the frame. This is not really much of a problem since once you hang the print on the wall, it will flap no more. The lower 2 corners of the frame had some veneer lose so i blackened over the wood where the veneer was missing so that now the damage is much less noticeable (see photo 4 and 5). Beautiful original color woodblock by Kasumatsu Shiro depicting an elegant Japanese home framed with delicate autumnal tree leaves. Shiro was known for his color woodblock prints; this is a fine example of his work in beautiful condition. Born in the Asakusa section of Tokyo to a middle class family, Shiro Kasamatsu started his art studies at a young age. In 1911 he became a student of Kaburagi Kiyokata, a master of the bijin-ga genre. Shiro studied Japanese style painting (Nihonga) but unlike his teacher, he concentrated on landscapes. Kiyokata chose his artist’s name “Shiro”, which used the character shi from one of Kiyokata’s own pseudonyms and was conveniently an alternate spelling of Kasamatsu’s given name. By the late 1950′s, Shiro was ready to break out on his own. He began carving and printing his own designs in limited, numbered editions. He signed these prints himself in English. Some of his Watanabe-published prints also bear English signatures; however, these signatures were applied by Watanabe’s employees, not by the artist himself.
