This print is after “Sudden Shower over Shin-Ohashi Bridge and Atake” from the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, 1857, by Utagawa Hiroshige. We believe this edition to be a early 20th century reprint. Condition: Good some fading/discoloration to the paper. Height 12 1/4 Inches 31.0 cm. Width 8 1/8 Inches 20.7 cm. This listing is for a Hiroshige (1797 – 1858) Japanese woodblock print, “Rabbits and Reeds in Moonlight” 18.25×9. This print depicts two rabbits surrounded by rushes and looking up at the full moon. One of the twelve animals of the zodiac, the rabbit is associated with longevity. A beautiful print with fine bokashi shading. The waka, 31-syallable poem below the moon reads. The night is tender on a bed of grasses. Would the hare’s wife sleep wet in night dew? A beautiful woodblock with great expression. The print is in very good condition. At first, he painted beauties and portraits of actors, but he soon became famous as a popular painter by creating numerous landscapes, starting with his “Famous Places of the Eastern Capital” series.
