As if from an icy spring. This print is especially desirable as the artist mixed mica flakes into the printing ink for the body of the lobster. Also included will be the published book from 1980 on this series of woodblock prints from The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York: Hiroshige: A Shoal of Fishes. Will arrive well-packed and trackable to you CONUSA address. TITLE: Lobster and Prawn from Great Fish Series. IMAGE SIZE: approximately 14.5″ x 10″. Ando Hiroshige (1797 – October 12, 1858) was born in 1797 under the name of Ando Tokutaro in Edo (Tokyo) as the son of a samurai and fireman. He became one of the greatest masters of ukiyo-e (Japanese woodblock prints), especially in the genre of Japanese landscape prints. At the age of twelve, both his parents died. Two years later, in 1811, the young Hiroshige received a chance to join the famous Utagawa painting school. At that time, the ukiyo-e master Toyohiro Utagawa was the head of the studio. In 1812 he was formally allowed to take the name Utagawa. From then on he called himself Utagawa Hiroshige. In the ukiyo-e literature he is usually referenced as Hiroshige Ando. The first work by Utagawa Hiroshige was a book illustration published in 1818, when he was 21 years old. Until 1830, Hiroshige created prints in the traditional style learned from his master Toyohiro Utagawa. His early commissions were book illustrations. Typical subjects out of that time are kabuki actors prints, beautiful women and a few warrior prints. Fifty-three Stages of the Tokaido. From 1830 on, Hiroshige Utagawa tried his luck with a new genre – landscape prints. One of his great masterpieces is the series Tokaido gojusan-tsugi no uchi created from 1833 to 1834 with 55 Hiroshige prints in oban format. In the literature you will find slightly varying English translations like Fifty-three Stages of the Tokaido or From the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido. The Tokaido was a coastal highway connecting Edo with Kyoto, the residence of the emperor. The stations must be imagined as a kind of turn-pikes where tolls had to be paid. The stations had lodges and simple restaurants where travelers could spend the night and get a meal. The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido became the basis of Hiroshige’s fame and commercial success. For the next twenty years he concentrated his efforts on landscape prints. Utagawa Hiroshige -The 53 Stations of the Tokaido’Nissaka – Shuku’ represents No 25 in the series. Thanks for all the offers, but silly ones need not be sent! It is a rather strange composition, as Kanbara is located in a very temperate area warmed by the Kuroshio current offshore, and even a light snowfall is extremely rare. In Japan (as everywhere), many villages in different parts of the country have the same name. Hiroshige intended his print to represent the Kanbara which was the 15th post station on the Tokaido Road, which ran from Edo and Kyoto. But in creating his portfolio The 53 stations of the Tokaido Road, apparently he often relied on existing prints and guidebooks. It seems likely that he mistakenly used an image of a very different Kanbara: the one depicted here is probably a village in the very mountainous Gunma prefecture near the resort town of Karuizawa. It is famous as the village buried during the August 1783 eruption of Mt. Asama, which killed 466 people. The night time snow prints are my favourite and look fantastic on a wall. PRINT: Flawless condition, perfectly preserved as was each print curated by Robert O Muller. Genuine sought after provenance. Presented in period display folder, with border. Just by being a fairly priced print, this is a real investment for any collector, and would be lovely framed on display. Personal inspection welcome, item located in Manchester UK. You can arrange your own courier if you wish. More pictures can be supplied upon request.
