This is an original Japanese Woodblock print by Kawase Hasui. This is a very rare Pre Earthquake print. A great designed print of a Falling snow at the Miyajima temple. Signed Hasui with artist’s pre-earthquake seal Kawase , and red Watanabe publisher’s seal, the series title cartouche on left margin, followed by the print title, Seiten no yuki (Miyajima) , and the date, Taisho [1921]. Has some toning small pin holes in each corner, otherwise a very fine print with nice color and strike. Measures 15″ x 10 1/8″. Please look at photos for grading and condition. This is an original Japanese Woodblock print by Kawase Hasui. This is a rare 1924 print. A great designed print of a figure in a nighttime rain storm. Signed in blue ink Hasui , with red circular seal Kawase , with publishers red circular seal Watanabe ; the series cartouche on the left-hand margin, Tabi miyage dai sanshu , followed by the print title, Suo Kintaikyo ; and the date beneath, Taisho jusannen saku made in Taisho [1924]. Has some toning couple pin holes in corner, otherwise a very fine print with strong color and exceptional strike details. Measures 15″ x 10 1/8″. Please look at photos for grading and condition. Condition: As shown; toned, trimmed, attached to thin board. Size: 8 -3/4 x 8 -3/4. A pre-earthquake chuban size design from the early series, Selection of Scenes of Japan. The series seal is in the left margin with the. This spectacular design was ONLY issued in a single limited edition printing of 300 impressions. Mori in Chicago, mid-1930′s and kept for three generations in the same collection of an American family. Kumamoto Castle was erected in the first decade of the 17th century by Kato Kiyomasa, and later was under the rule of the Hosokawa family. It was badly damaged in 1877 during the Satsuma rebellion, the last armed uprising against the new reforms of the Meiji government. Saigo Takamori and his troops sheltered for some fifty days in the castle before their eventual defeat at the hands of government troops. The castle was rebuilt almost one-hundred years later in 1960. Due to the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 – which destroyed almost two-thirds of Tokyo – Hasui moved near the Magome district in 1926 and in 1930 to Magome itself, where he lived until his death. Surprisingly, the number of prints that Hasui created illustrating the surroundings of Magome are not great, although he did keep sketchbooks that portrayed scenes of the area. Throughout his career Hasui produced many albums of sketches; however, tragically, he lost some 200 sketchbooks in the conflagration following the Kanto earthquake.
