He studied ukiyo-e when he was young, studied Japanese painting in the Shijo school Suzuki Hyakunen, and later worked as a Japanese painter. The elaborate bird-and-flower paintings have received high praise in the world, and the “Keinen Kacho Gafu” have won awards at the Chicago World’s Fair and the Paris World’s Fair. The book has side stitched binding; each page is formed from a single sheet of paper printed on one side and then folded with the printed side out. The top and bottom corners of the spine are enclosed with what appears to be silk edging. A rectangular printed paper title slip is pasted onto the front cover in the top left corner. Pale pink, blue, green and gray were used to highlight the black line images. Approximate size: 9-1/2″ x 6-1/4″. Condition: Very nice copy of botanical woodblock prints by Hokusai with good detail. I believe that this was issued in 1912 (Meiji 45). Binding is tight and pages are intact, clean, and unmarked. Additional pictures available upon request. Title: Kanga shinan nihen????? Volume 1 of a set of three woodblock printed books. Important book in the history of Japanese picture books, treated in several of the main studies by Jack Hillier. This set by Bunpo was created to update the first series of Kanga Shinan by Ayatari Takebe, using color printing rather than black outline. The majority of the pages in this album focus on trees and plantlife, with huts, boats and figures treated in the latter pages.
