Japanese Woodblock Print Kitagawa Utamaro Geisha Young Tree Fresh Leaves Ukiyo-e MA388. This hand-printed woodblock print, meticulously restored by the Adachi Hanga Research Institute, is a faithful reproduction of “Toji Zensei Bijin-zoroi: Matsubaya-nai Some-nosuke – Wakaki Wakaba” (Array of the Most Prosperous Beauties of the Time: Some-nosuke of Matsubaya – Young Tree, Fresh Leaves) by Kitagawa Utamaro, one of the most renowned Ukiyo-e artists of the Edo period. Utamaro’s mastery of Bijin-ga (beautiful women portraits) is evident in his ability to depict refined elegance, subtle expressions, and exquisite kimono patterns. This artwork is part of Utamaro’s “Toji Zensei Bijin-zoroi” (Array of the Most Prosperous Beauties of the Time) series, which showcases celebrated courtesans from famous teahouses of the Edo period. In this piece, Some-nosuke of Matsubaya is portrayed with an air of youthful charm and sophistication, her name poetically linked to “Wakaki Wakaba” (Young Tree, Fresh Leaves), symbolizing fresh beauty and vitality. The flowing lines, delicate shading, and masterful use of color exemplify Utamaro’s iconic style, bringing this timeless scene to life. Printed on high-quality washi paper, this edition maintains the depth of color, soft tonal transitions, and intricate detailing true to the original Ukiyo-e technique. The print includes reference materials, providing insight into its history and the meticulous restoration process. Width: 35 cm / 13.78 inches. Height: 49.3 cm / 19.41 inches.
