Set of 3 Large Signed 19th C. JAPANESE WOODBLOCK Prints of Flowers c. JAPANESE WOODBLOCK Prints of Flowers , circa 1890 (or earlier). FREE PICK-UP IN THE CHICAGOLAND AREA. Up for your consideration is a small collection of 3 antique Japanese woodblock prints, c. These pieces are very early impressions, and each color of the plate is vivid, and has the appearance of a fine watercolor. The artist appears to have further enhanced the woodblocks with the addition of watercolors (mostly the reds). These are as fine Meiji-era examples as you are likely to find. Each piece bears the artist’s chop mark (stamp) in red and black. “Antique Woodblock Print – Unique – Zeigetsu” and “#37″ are written in graphite at the bottom of the print. “Made in Japan” is stamped on the back. The paper measures 18.6″ high and 13.5″ wide. The printed area measures 14″ high and 10.5″ wide. Overall, the piece is in excellent condition. There are a few small bends in the bottom of the paper, see last photo. There is also some discoloration to the print as a whole, see photograph of the back of the print. The piece is without water damage, tears, or other flaws. “Antique Woodblock Print – Unique – Zeigetsu” and “#21″ are written in graphite at the bottom of the print. The paper measures 18.5″ tall and 13.5″ wide. The printed area measures 14″ tall and 10.5″ wide. There is one large fold to the top right side of the print, see last photo. There are also two spots where there are remnants of glue from matting – some of the first layer of the paper has been removed with the glue. There are also a few very mild bends and a small amount of discoloration in the paper but it is otherwise without tears, folds, and other flaws. “Antique Woodblock Print – Unique – Zeigetsu” and “#28″ are written in graphite at the bottom of the print. “Made in Japan” is stamped on the back, and “Poppies, Red, 732, and 739″ written in cursive in graphite. The print measures 14.2″ tall and 10.6″ wide. There is some discoloration to the paper, see last photo and photo of the back of the print. There are also two marks to the back of the paper, neither visible from the front, one red and one blue, both measuring about. See second and third to last photos. There is some dog-earing to the corners of the print, see fourth from last photo. Additionally, there are two areas, on each side, where the first layer of paper has been removed from the back of the print, presumably from matting see fifth and sixth from last photos. Otherwise, the print is free from tears, folds, and other imperfections. This quote is for the Continental U. Only, and the item will be sent via UPS. International Buyers § Please Note. The ukiyo-e[a] genre of art flourished in Japan from the 17th through 19th centuries. Its artists produced woodblock prints and paintings of such subjects as female beauties; kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers; scenes from history and folk tales; travel scenes and landscapes; flora and fauna; and erotica. The term ukiyo-e IPA: u. E translates as “pictures of the floating world”. Edo (modern Tokyo) became the seat of government for the military dictatorship in the early 17th century. The merchant class at the bottom of the social order found themselves the greatest beneficiaries of the city’s rapid economic growth. Many indulged in the entertainments of kabuki theatre, courtesans, and geisha of the pleasure districts. The term ukiyo (“floating world”) came to describe this hedonistic lifestyle. Printed or painted ukiyo-e images of this environment emerged in the late 17th century and were popular with the merchant class, who had become wealthy enough to afford to decorate their homes with them. The earliest success was in the 1670s with Moronobu’s paintings and monochromatic prints of beautiful women. Colour prints came graduallyat first added by hand for special commissions. By the 1740s, artists such as Masanobu used multiple woodblocks to print areas of colour. From the 1760s the success of Harunobu’s “brocade prints” led to full-colour production becoming standard, each print made with numerous blocks. The peak period in terms of quantity and quality was marked by portraits of beauties and actors by masters such as Kiyonaga, Utamaro, and Sharaku in the late 18th century. This peak was followed in the 19th century by a pair of masters best remembered for their landscapes: the bold formalist Hokusai, whose Great Wave off Kanagawa is one of the best-known works of Japanese art; and the serene, atmospheric Hiroshige, most noted for the series The Fifty-three Stations of the Tkaid. Following the deaths of these two masters, and against the technological and social modernization that followed the Meiji Restoration of 1868, ukiyo-e production went into steep decline. Some ukiyo-e artists specialized in making paintings, but most works were prints. Artists rarely carved their own woodblocks for printing; rather, production was divided between the artist, who designed the prints; the carver, who cut the woodblocks; the printer, who inked and pressed the woodblocks onto hand-made paper; and the publisher, who financed, promoted, and distributed the works. As printing was done by hand, printers were able to achieve effects impractical with machines, such as the blending or gradation of colours on the printing block. Ukiyo-e was central to forming the West’s perception of Japanese art in the late 19th centuryespecially the landscapes of Hokusai and Hiroshige. From the 1870s Japonism became a prominent trend and had a strong influence on the early Impressionists such as Degas, Manet, and Monet, as well as Post-Impressionists such as van Gogh and Art Nouveau artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec. The 20th century saw a revival in Japanese printmaking: the shin-hanga (“new prints”) genre capitalized on Western interest in prints of traditional Japanese scenes, and the ssaku-hanga (“creative prints”) movement promoted individualist works designed, carved, and printed by a single artist. Prints since the late 20th century have continued in an individualist vein, often made with techniques imported from the West such as screen printing, etching, mezzotint, and mixed media. ALL OUR PRINTS ARE ORIGINAL JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINTS. Paper Size 16.5″x 8.6″. Very good condition for age, Excellent impression and color, there is an evidence at the back top right and lower right corners of being attached to a cardboard in the past. Ohno Bakufu worked as a successful painter and printmaker during the first half of the twentieth century. He made some fine landscape and nature prints. Print artists who were active during the first half of the twentieth century can usually be attributed to one of the two art movements of the period – the shin hanga or the sosaku hanga “camp” of woodblock printmakers. Not so with Ohno Bakufu. His style does not fit into any of these two groups. Ohno’s art works look more like “lost in time and space”. Ohno Bakufu did not carve and print himself as the Western-oriented sosaku hanga artist did. Publisher was Kyoto Hanga-in. In general, the Kyoto publishers at that time did not practice the export-oriented style of the Tokyo publishers with the figurehead publisher Watanabe Shozaburo. The Kyoto publishers practiced a more conservative style, a bit retrograde with a touch of modernism. Your satisfaction guarenteed, if you are not pleased with the item please send it back. WE WILL NOT CHARGE ADDITIONAL PAYMENTS FOR MULTIPLE AUCTIONS, YOU CAN. The item “BAKUFU ONO (1888-1976), Japanese wood block Print Flowers I, Signed, OHNO” is in sale since Monday, March 30, 2015.
