Hand Signed by Kasamatsu in Pencil. (This edition is the First Publication). Usodo first edition (Usually edition of 100). Oban; 16 1/2″ x 11″ (42 x 28.3 cm). Actual print size- 15 1/2″ x 10 3/8″ or 39.5cm x 26.7cm. Date of this edition. Left hand margin bears in the japanese style marking only used for first editions jozuri in japanese. Standard Unsodo printing “smudge” above middle right margin and bottom right corner margin. Please inspect all photographs as they are part of item’s condition. Usual wear for age on corners (see pictures) otherwise great condition colors are vibrant in the print itself. Floated in professional frame, the matting on the frame has a water stain and other spots, toning (but not on the work itself) Nice color. Evocative imagery with tight color registration. Title: Kankai Pavilion, Wakaura Bay / First printing. Made in 1950 / original block was broken, no more printed. Japanese woodblock print / handmade print from original block. Watanabe red 6mm seal. Size: 24 cm× 36.5cm. Attention: If it is below the purchace price, the lot will pass. Kawase Hasui, whose name is Kawase Bunjiro, was born at Shiba, Tokyo. Kanagaki Robun, a noted playwright of early Meiji period was his uncle. From childhood he loved to paint; later he became a pupil of Kaburkai Kiyokata. And in the spring of 1912 exhibited a picture in the Tatumi Exhibition of Painting. During the early stages of his art career, Hasui produced only paintings; he became. Interested in woodblock prints after seeing Shinsui’s prints “Eight sight of Omi”. Which were shown at the exhibition of the Kyodokai sponsored by Kiyokata’s school. Some of Hasui’s small landscape pictures led Shozaburou Watanabe to see his possibilities. Hasui then did his first color prints from a series of sketches made at Shiobara in 1918.
