Signs of Love – Creative Shunga woodblock print. This woodblock print is one of a series of 12 Shunga prints. It features a man and a woman engaged in a secret act, each depicting a different animal on the back of the woman’s kimono. American creative woodblock print artist. Born in Duluth, Minnesota, USA. He has lived in Japan since 1955 and has continued to paint landscapes and buildings (mainly townhouses and teahouses). His graceful, magnificent, and unique works have won him many fans in Japan and abroad. His prints are called “creative woodblock print, ” and are characterized by the fact that he performs all the processes of woodblock printing alone: sketching, carving, and printing. The colors change each time depending on the way the woodblocks are layered, so it is not a printmaking process of making many identical prints. In addition, he destroys the woodblocks himself at the end of the process, so he cannot make new prints in the future, which makes his prints rare. Many fans also want his “Sumi-e” and “Kutani-ware”. Harvard University, the Minnesota Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the National Gallery of Australia have his works in their collections.
