Japan Edo Illustrated book of flora HONZO ZUFU Color Woodblock print book Vol. HONZO ZUFU (lit The Illustrated Book of Herbalism) Vol. 33: Stone Grass (Unlike the modern classification, it contains a cactus succulent plant) About 50 pages of fine woodcut printing illustrated encyclopedia. Original title slip and cover. This item was owned as a material at the Kyoto craft workshop and therefore has traces of utilized to hard (Exterior wear, back cover inside damage, paper scratches and slight contamination, etc). Iwasaki kanen, the author of this book, was a samurai of shogunate retainer, a man who studied plants for a lifetime. Issuance of the first edition of this book, which was one of the first full-fledged botanical books based on Herbalism in Japan, began in 1830. After that, when the first 6 books were issued in woodcut printing, the funds were depleted, and the subsequent volumes were distributed as manuscripts of reserved production. Distribution of 92 books was complete in 1828, and honzo-zufu was completed. According to the records, the total number of reservations is only 30 sets, and the first edition of this book is almost impossible to obtain. This 1922 version is the whole volume of Honzo-zufu completed by woodcut printing after more than 100 years since the first publishing, and the printing of this book which reproduced perfectly up to delicate neutral colors is highly appreciated. A comparison of the Japan name and scientific names of the plants contained in this volume has been added at the end of this book. The classification of plants in this book is based on the Chinese herbology book (Compendium of Materia Medica), which Kanen used for reference. I appreciate your courtesy! The condition is described above for more information please check the photos. Image 9 inches x 14 inches. Sheet 10.5 inches x 15 inches. More about the artist. Hasui Kawase (, Kawase Hasui, May 18, 1883 November 7, 1957) was a Japanese artist. He was one of the most prominent print designers of the shin-hanga (“new prints”) movement, whose artists depicted traditional subjects with a style influenced by Western art. Like earlier prints, Hasui’s works were commonly landscapes, but his prints featured everyday scenes and natural lighting. Life From youth Hasui dreamed of an art career, but his parents had him take on the family rope and thread wholesaling business. Its bankruptcy when he was 26 freed him to pursue art. He approached Kiyokata Kaburagi to teach him, but Kaburagi instead encouraged him to study Western-style painting, which he did with Okada Sabursuke for two years. Two years later he again applied as a student to Kaburagi, who this time accepted him. [1] After seeing an exhibition of Shinsui It’s Eight Views of Lake Biwa Hasui approached Shinsui’s publisher Shzabur Watanabe, who had Hasui make three experimental prints that Watanabe published in August 1918. [1] The series Twelve Views of Tokyo, Eight Views of the Southeast, and the first Souvenirs of Travel of 16 prints followed in 1919, each issued two prints at a time. [2] Hasui’s twelve-print A Collection of Scenes of Japan begun in 1922 went unfinished when the 1923 Great Kant earthquake destroyed Watanabe’s workshop, including the finished woodblocks for the yet-undistributed prints and Hasui’s sketchbooks. Hasui travelled the Hokuriku, San’in, and San’y regions later in 1923 and upon his return in February 1924 developed his sketches into his third Souvenirs of Travel series. [3] Kawase studied ukiyo-e and Japanese style painting at the studio of Kiyokata Kaburagi. He mainly concentrated on making watercolors of actors, everyday life and landscapes, many of them published as illustrations in books and magazines in the last few years of the Meiji period and early Taish period. During the forty years of his artistic career, Hasui worked closely with Shzabur Watanabe, publisher and advocate of the shin-hanga movement. His works became widely known in the West through American connoisseur Robert O. In 1956, he was named a Living National Treasure in Japan. Hasui’s younger brother Kasuke moved to London in 1916 to work as an accountant for Okura and Co, he married an English woman, Clara Greenfield, they have one surviving daughter Kathleen and grand daughter Karen Kawase. His maternal uncle was Kanagaki Robun? With the pen name of Nozaki Bunz? (18291894), a Japanese author and journalist, producing the first manga magazine. Style Kawase worked almost exclusively on landscape and townscape prints based on sketches he made in Tokyo and during travels around Japan. Kawase’s prints feature locales that are tranquil and obscure in urbanizing Japan. Hasui considered himself a realist and employed his training in Western painting in his compositions. Like Hiroshige he made travel and landscape prints, though his subjects were less known locations rendered with naturalistic light, shade, and texture, without the captions and titles that were standard in prints of Hiroshige’s age. [3] Kawase left a large body of woodblock prints and watercolors: many of the watercolors are linked to the woodblock prints. He also produced oil paintings, traditional hanging scrolls and a few bybu (folding screens). In the West, Kawase is mainly known as a Japanese woodblock printmaker. He and Hiroshi Yoshida are widely regarded as two of the greatest artists of the shin-hanga style, and are known especially for their landscape prints. E m ail me with questions!!! HERES A SIGNED ORIGINAL VINTAGE 1950S MODERN MIDCENTURY JAPANESE COLOR WOODBLOCK PRINT BY MASAHARU AOYAMA (1893 – 1969) DISPLAYING A WATCHFUL OWL PERCHED HIGH UP AMONG THE PINE TREES AND LOOKING DOWNWARD PRESUMABLY AT ITS PREY WHILE A FLOCK OF GEESE ARE FLYING BY IN THE DISTANCE! The dimensions of the color woodblock print that can be viewed within the matt board are sixteen inches (16) in height by eleven inches (11) in width. Presumably, the dimensions of the woodblock print continue underneath the matt board. The overall dimensions of the original wooden frame are approximately twenty two and one quarter inches (22 1/4) in height by seventeen and one half inches (17 1/2) in width. Pencil signed in the lower right corner M. Aoyama along with Aoyama’s red seal located in the bottom left corner. Also, Please Note: This Masaharu Aoyama color woodblock print was acquired from an important estate in Carmel, California. The estate had been owned by a well-known collector of Asian art and design. To this end, there is a small inventory number attached to the front side bottom edge of the wooden frame. Condition: This Masaharu Aoyama color woodblock print itself looks to be in very nice and clean condition. But please pay attention — there are a number of age-related grime spots on the inside surface of the glass covering the print and the only way to clean them off is to remove the print and the sheet of glass from its original backing (which has never been done). Also, the original wooden frame has some small scuffs that show up as “red” areas but these are small and unobtrusive. And the original paper backing is still intact but does have punctures, tears, and small age spotting. Again, the Masaharu Aoyama color woodblock print itself looks to be in very nice and clean condition! Aoyama Masaharu (Seiji), born in Saitama prefecture studied traditional ink painting at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. Following his studies he took a position at the Imperial Household Museum, which he kept until his early retirement in 1936. Aoyama exhibited his ink paintings in the official state controlled Teiten events, an equivalent of the French Salon. He produced his first prints in the 1920s. Some self-carved and self-printed (jizuri) some published with cooperation of Ishiyama publishing agency, are in close relation with the modern manner of the Sosaku Hanga movement. Aoyamas favorite subjects were kachoga, images of birds, flowers and small animals. Please Note: This original Kaoru Kawano color woodblock print still retains its original frame, matting board, and the reverse side paper backing. It looks as though it has never been removed. The image size is approximately fourteen and three quarters inches (14 ¾) in height by nine inches (9) in width. Because this Kawano color woodblock print still retains all of its original matting and framing, it cannot be easily accessed to obtain the dimensions for prints sheet size. However, according to the website for Ohmi Gallery, the format for this particular color woodblock print is known as Oban and the sheet size measures approximately sixteen and three quarters inches (16 ¾) in height by eleven and one half inches (11 ½) in width. To this end, the dimensions of the woodblock print continue underneath the matt board. The overall dimensions of the original black-painted wooden frame are approximately twenty three and one eighth inches (23 1/8) in height by a little over fifteen and one half inches (15 1/2) in width. Signed in pencil in the top left corner Kaoru Kawano along with Kawanos red seal. Condition: This Kaoru Kawano color woodblock print looks to be in excellent and clean condition — absolutely beautiful! The original matting and the reverse side paper backing are also in excellent and clean condition. The original black-painted wooden frame has some small white scuffs and markings on its front side surface areas but is generally very good and clean! And the original paper backing does have a few small punctures located in one area. Provenance: This Kaoru Kawano color woodblock print was recently acquired from an important estate in Carmel, California. Kaoru Kawano was born 1918 in Hokkaido, Japan, and studied at the Kawabata Art School beginning in 1934. He had his first prints accepted by the Japan Print Association in 1944. By the 1950s he began to exhibit more frequently in shows around the world. None of his prints, not even his (apparently early) limited edition prints, are dated. Kawano made effective use of woodgrain patterns for both the background and the body of his subjects, which provide depth and texture. This use of plywood surface textures was characteristic of the works of many’sosaku hanga’ artists. Sosaku hanga’ artists took pride in cutting the blocks and printing their own works. This is in contrast to’shin hanga’ artists who continued to collaborate with professional block cutters and printers. KABUKI ACTOR- ICHIKAWA KUENZO I. (Early to mid-19th century). Antique Japanese woodblock prints. This wonderful early-to-mid 19th century Japanese color’u. The colors remain vivid and saturated. The print may have been kept and previously protected in a folio. The image is clear and crisp, superbly rendered and artistically realized. The overall composition of a figure on a wooden balcony, peering over at all below, is compositionally well balanced and seemingly effortlessly accomplished. The deep indigo, cerulean blues, tangerine, melon, olive and charcoal black are wonderfully proportioned, balanced and the piece enjoys saturated, intense color as well as faint washes, illustrating the subtle, master craftsmanship of the artist. The figure stands on a wooden balcony overlooking all below, with two black cranes sweeping across the sky to the left. Abstract paper origami frogs in groups, fantastically float away, as if foreshadowing later Japanese anime art, that was to come afterwards in the 20th century. There are episodes of black or deep charcoal, which populate the image, creating visual interest, excitement, color fluctuation and tonal gradations between darks and lights. Signed by the artist and publisher with black ink stamps in Japanese character calligraphy. Top-shelf, beautiful and simply outstanding. This early/mid-19th century Japanese color woodblock print by the celebrated, famous Japanese woodblock master Utagawa Kunisida (Toyokuni III,) is in very well preserved condition. Utagawa Kunisada / Japanese (1786- 1865) also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III, was the most popular, prolific and financially successful Japanese designer of’ukiyo-e’ woodblock prints of 19th-century Japan.
