Marvelous Scene of Royalty at Leisure, 1896. It is his Royal Boating Party. Chikanobu was from a distinguished samurai family and fought in support of the Tokugawa shogunate against the forces of the Emperor Meiji. As a youth he studied under both Kuniyoshi and Kunichika. Though he designed many warrior and kabuki prints, he is perhaps best known for his marvelous bijin-ga, or beauty portraits, such as in this wonderful triptych. A love scene of the ladies of the royal court enjoying a Spring boat ride. Would be striking displayed on your home or office wall. And is bound to become a cherished family heirloom.
