Size: 16 x 10 -3/4 (Oversized margins). Print has been properly stored flat in a print folio for the past 70 years. Watanabe print shop in the mid-1940′s and has always been properly stored away. Condition: Very fine, with full oversized margins and MINT delicate mica rainfall showcased in the multiple images. Has all the qualities of a first state impression with period paper, darker impression and dated provenance as well. An ancient pine tree at the side of a pond; it conveys the brooding mood of a bleak nocturnal downpour. This work was undoubtedly created to rival the print’Night Rain at Karasaki’, by Hiroshige. It is a wonderful example of kacho-e or bird and flower prints. During production, Rakuzan apologized to his subscribers for delays resulting from his difficulty in finding artisans capable of producing these large and technically complex images. This print is #86 of the series and is titled Dormant Willow and Female Gray Wagtail with Baikal Teal (Winter). For information about Rakusan and his beautiful prints. There is no loss of the image on the upper or lower edges, but there is approximately 1 of image loss on the left edge and ½ of image loss on the right edge. The print is laid down to a cardstock that measures 16×20. The coloring of this print and the signature clearly indicate this print is from the 2. The print is in fair to good condition, especially for its age. Besides the fact that the margins are missing and it is laid down, there are a few creases in the upper right corner. The piece is 26″ x 33″ and unframed. The piece is #32 in a low edition of 50. There is a small 1/2 tear to one side away from the image. A good framer will be able to minimize all of the issues. I have seen several of Nakayama’s prints and they can all be rough from his technique. The print is a rare early minimalist image of Zen Rocks floating on deep rich lines. The rocks are printed with metalized inks that shine and show differently as the light and the viewer’s perspective change. For all it’s simplicity this is one of the most complex and deep prints I have ever handled. It was not easy to photograph and will be different every time you see it. In bright light the warm reddish floating lines become the focus and in low light the rocks float in space. This is a stunning print by a True Artist, Master Printmaker and Visionary.
