The Japanese landscape in the background shows multiple roofs of a village only just visible over the tree line. The fisherman is standing on the bank of a river under an arched bridge in a suit of grass and hat to help protect himself from the falling rain. This work is signed in the low left corner and dates to the early to mid 20th century. The condition of the woodblock is excellent with good original coloring measuring 7 x 9 3/4 inches while its original wood frame measures 10 3/8 x 15 1/2 inches. A beautiful antique woodblock print depicting Kurama Tengu, from the series “One Hundred Noh Dramas (Nogaku hyakuban), ” NOGAKU HYAKUBAN. Kgyo Tsukioka (, Tsukioka Kgyo), sometimes called Kgyo Sakamaki (, Sakamaki Kgyo), (April 18, 1869 February 25, 1927) was a Japanese artist of the Meiji period. He was a student and adopted son of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, and also studied with Ogata Gekk. Although Kgyo sometimes painted other subjects, for most of his career he made pictures of Japanese noh theatre, either as large-scale paintings or colored woodblock prints. Some sets, such as Ngaku zue, have been preserved as albums in their original bindings, including accordion-style bindings known as orihon, while other sets such as Nga taikan, were issued in sewn bindings known as yamato toji. Japanese Woodblock Print, Joichi Hoshi, Beautiful trees. Print 10.5×7.5 – Frame 16×12. Was a Japanese printmaker best known for his depictions of trees in centered compositions. The trees are often shown leafless with monochromatic backgrounds, sometimes incorporating gold or silver leaf into the layers of the intricate woodblock process. Born in 1913 in Niigata, Japan, Hoshi began his artistic career after working as an elementary school teacher in Taiwan for several years. He later became a mimeograph printer and started creating his own prints. The artist graduated from the Musashino University of Fine Arts in 1956. Before focusing on his recurring motif of trees in the 1970s, Hoshi depicted galaxies and constellations. He died on June 17, 1979 in Tokyo, Japan. Today, Hoshis works are held in the collections of the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Cincinnati Art Museum, among others.
