Kaoru Kawano Portrait of the Girl Japanese Woodblock Signed Listed Artist

Signed in pencil lower left. Block Size-15″ x 10″. Kaoru Kawano was born in Otaru, Hokkaido in 1916, and studied at Kawabata art school in 1934. Because his earlier works showed such great promise, they were displayed at the Nihon Hanga Kyokai Exhibition (Japan Print Society) in 1944. He interrupted his print-making activities to join the army, but later was unfortunate to become a prisoner of war in Siberia. In 1949 he resumed exhibiting with Nihon Hanga Kyokai, and subsequently with Kokugakai in 1952. He moved to Tokyo in 1958, and participated in international competitions and solo exhibitions in New York, Seattle, Chicago, and elsewhere. His works are characterized by highly textured abstract representations of children. ARTISTS PROOF FROM FIRST LIMITED EDITION JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINT NOCTURNE By GASHU FUKAMI Hand Titled, Signed, and Marked as an Artists Proof all in pencil by the Artist. GASHU FUKAMI was born in 1953 at Kumaoto, Japan and completed his education at Doshisya University in Kyoto in 1975. He then studied Woodblock Print making under Takeji Asano until 1977 and decided take a three years arts course at the Kaji Aso studio in Boston. The first showing of his work was held at a solo Exhibition at the Heian Gallery in Kyoto in 1983 where his woodblock prints were extremely well received. In 1990 a showing at Yamashita Gallery in Nagasaki was also very successful and he has since had one man exhibitions in a large number of prestigious Japanese Galleries as well as in New York, most recently in 2013. His unique artistic style and fabulous use of colour and form have marked him as one of the leaders among modern woodblock artists.
