Fine original 1960s modern wood block print by Mitsuaki Sora (1933 -). This wood block print measures 13″ by 18 1/2″ overall. The print is composed of 18 colorful abstracted figures printed on paper. It is signed by the artist in pencil as follows. 5 9/50’68 – 11 SORA. Some overall light toning and the ink from the figures has bled out lightly around the figures. A few small non offensive creases and a few small non offensive tiny spots. Old masking tape to top of back. Mitsuaki Sora is well known for his modern sculptures and his work is housed in all the major museums throughout Japan. This 1968 print is the earliest I have found by Sora and has the most (18) of his famous colorful abstracted figures. Questions always welcome and thanks for looking. These are remarkable pieces of woodblock art, likely from the 1960s. They are hand signed and numbered by the artist. These are 2 very rare of his early woodblock prints from a limited series entitled “Remain”. Remain D is 2/20 and Remain B is 4/20. From what I can tell, they were in the original frame, glass. And matting, but I temporarily removed from the frame and glass for photos. Please contact me ahead of purchasing if you want to have the frames/glass included. What appears to be the original tape is still in place, at the top of each print only, connecting them to the matting. I took quite a few pictures to indicate the condition of the pieces. I don’t know enough about woodblock prints to know what type of restoration may be desired by a serious collector. I did my best to take helpful photos. Please send me a message and I will be more than happy to send you additional images. There are no tears but there is some discoloration of the paper that doesn’t distract from the beauty of the images to my untrained eye, but a serious collector may want to have restoration done. They are impressive examples measuring approximately 15″ x 24″ (image size), 21″ x 30″ (including matting) and 24″ x 33″ (with optional frames). Please feel free to ask my any questions, or ask for more pictures. I will be glad to give any information about them I can. Kiyoshi Sait (green abstract) boxed set 12 woodblock printed cards'50s INV1910

Kiyoshi Sait boxed set of 12 woodblock printed cards by circa 1950s. Dimensions: each card measures 4 5/8 x 3 1/2 inches. Condition: pristine with original box. Medium: boxed set of mini woodblock prints presented as cards with envelopes. The numbered images include. 1 Haniwa, ancient pots. 3 Winter in Aizu. 4 Temple of Moss, Kyoto. 6 At an Indian Village, New Mexico. 7 Aizu in Winter. Pictured are 12 early small-format woodblock (embossing apparent) prints by the famous Japanese woodblock print artist Kiyoshi Sait. Each woodblock print was made in the form of a gift card and includes a matching envelope. Each is printed on good quality Japanese washi paper, and includes a title and scene number. They are not posthumous restrikes, but lifetime editions. Kiyoshi Sait 1907 – 1997 was a ssaku hanga artist in 20th-century Japan. In 1938, he issued his first prints in his now famous “Winter in Aizu” series. Saito was one of the first Japanese printmaking artists to have won at the São Paulo Biennale in 1951. Sait’s early works depict villages populated with local Japanese with a high degree of realism and three-dimensionality. His more mature works merge modern elements with Japanese tradition. His prints feature architecture and plant life flattened in two-dimensionality. These are unowned sets, which come from the residual inventory from a bookstore/gallery which operated in Manhattan 1940s-1970s. As such, all cards are in mint condition. In rare instances, a card may have minor creasing, none of which affects the imagery. Provenance: From the residual estate inventory of The Golden Griffin Gallery/Arts Inc. Operated in New York City, New York from the 1950s to the 1970s. In the mid 1940s, Arts, Inc. Was established as a publishing house specializing in European scholarly and artistic works. In the 1950s, Arts, Inc. The parent company, expanded to create, first, the Golden Griffin Bookstore and then the Griffin Gallery, which dealt primarily with contemporary American and European artists. The Golden Griffin was known as the Continental Bookstore because of its stock of European titles. Hiroyuki Tajima (Tajima Hiroyuki, 19111984) was a Japanese printmaker of the ssaku-hanga school. He was born in Tokyo and graduated from Nihon University in 1932. In 1943, he graduated from the Western-style painting division of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. He created his first print in 1946, and joined the Bijutsu Bunka Kyokai (a group of abstract and surrealist artists) the same year. He also studied Nagase Yoshi (18911978), an artist of the Ssaku-hanga school. In 1963, he became a member of the Nihon Hanga Kyokai (Japanese Print Association). He is best known for his luminous abstract woodblock prints with broad areas of rich dense color. He was g reatly influenced by the methods and aesthetics of mid-century modernism while the spirit of his work is based on the ideals of East Asian calligraphy, traditional Japanese painting structure, and a sense of space derived partly from his Zen Buddhist beliefs. Tajimas dynamic colors and bold compositions and the the solemnity of balance and distillation of form resulted in works imbued with a sublime presence and meditative spirit. Tajima developed his own ink for his unique woodblock prints using powdered color mixed with the plastic medium phenol formaldehyde resin (Bakelite). This ink was extremely water-repellent with which Tajima created a primary pattern. He would then print the areas not printed by the special resin infused ink with a water-based ink or dye. This layering of the water-based and water resistant inks was Tajimas unique signature style. Measures as framed approx. 32.5″ x 25.5″ (note that there is no glass) Measurements of inner mat opening: 24.5″ x18.5″. Title: “Twilight” written in English & Japanese. This is a popular print by him with the bold yellow colors. Feel free to make an offer on it. Haku Maki was born in the Ibaraki Prefecture of Japan and is known for this wood and cement block relief prints. Maki is prominently known for his use of kanji and stylized calligraphy to created a bold statement. When creating his prints Maki would work wet cement onto in woodblocks to create new textures. Late in life, he began to focus on smaller works, with persimmons and other fruit, teacups, bowls, and bottles. While using his cement technique this would create a three-dimensional appearance. Maki was one of ten artists chosen for James Micheners 1968 book, The Modern Japanese Print An Appreciation. The book was launched at the same time as an exhibition of eighty-five different Maki prints from all periods. His work is housed in museums across the world including Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, British Museum, London, Art Institute of Chicago, and the Cincinnati Art Museum to name a few.
