This is a simple and emotive c. Kawano’s pieces frequently featured birds, children, and other natural imagery. Our research says the piece is entitled “Conversation” and the print depicts a sweet image of a child sitting cross-legged holding a small blue bird in their hand. The background is a deep forest green, and the seated figure is nestled between long-reaching slender tree branches. The deep, muted tones of this piece evoke nature, forest scenes, and a soft youthful joy. An amazing detail that is signature to Kawano’s work is the wood grain visible, which he incorporates as a textural element in the details of his pieces. The print is in excellent vintage condition with age-appropriate wear. It is matted and framed behind glass. The piece is signed in the bottom right corner by the artist. It measures 19 1/2 inches long and 14 3/4 inches wide. The item “1950s Vintage Kaoru Kawano Conversation Signed Japanese Woodblock Print” is in sale since Friday, September 27, 2019. Both greeting card size prints have been stored flat inside original envelopes since first being acquired in Karuizawa, Japan circa 1957. These were acquired at the Jacoulet studio and passed down within a single family. There was also a green colored pamphlet (Artist Bio) and additional catalog by Florence Wells. I only have these pieces left in the collection. Provenance: I acquired a large group of Jacoulet items that have been dispersed over the years. The entire group was from Jacoulet’s working studio. This color copy of the “Mysterious Pacific” – Mermaid print (7 -1/2 x 5 -1/8) came with this material. It looks to be from around the same period as all the other material; circa 1957. It has faint signs of toning in the margins of the paper, but the image is fresh and bright. Again, it’s not a print but a color copy that may have been used at the print studio… Maybe to assist in the printing process of creating the greeting card size version of, “Mysterious Pacific” – Mermaid. Not sure if it has value, but it’ll be included with the two greeting card prints so the three items stay together.
