Beautiful, original woodblock print by Kaoru Kawano, framed and matted. This is a lifetime edition with pencil signature below the artist’s seal. Please see our photos for complete details. A beautiful and serene woodblock print by famed Japanese artist Kaoru Kawano who was known for his whimsical portrayals of children and animals. Sta mped on the bottom-right of the face of the print with an original red ink artist’s stamp. It’s also stamped with a black ink gallery stamp on the back brown paper dust cover. The Little Gallery,’ 105 Chestnut Street, Springfield, Massachusetts. 21 ½” Height x 15 ¼” Width (Frame). X 15 ¼” Height x 9 ½ Width (Image). It’s medium-format in size, being nearly 22 inches in height and 16 inches in width. It’s still in its period vintage silver gilt painted wood frame and is under bright olive green, miter-cut mat board, with its orig brown paper back dust cover still intact and unbroken. Pictured is a portrait of a young Japanese girl with hair ribbon bow holding a fan, offering only the’essential’ pictorial information needed to describe her. This conceptually reduced artistic treatment of the subject is in keeping with Japanese Modernist art and in particular, color woodblock prints from Japan’s Showa period. It’s spare and economic in its design and uses only reduced, basic geometric shapes and a very limited color palette to describe them. Very quiet and very, very beautiful. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE ARTIST. Kaoro Kawano was born in Hokkaido, Japan and studied at the Kawabata Art School beginning in 1934. He was a participant and practitioner during Japan’s’Showa’ period. He had his first color woodblock prints accepted by the Japan Print Association in 1944. By the 1950′s he began to exhibit more frequently in shows around the world. None of his prints, not even his (apparently early) limited edition prints however, are dated. His reputation became international, with successful solo exhibitions in North America and elsewhere. Kawano’s prints frequently depict children and animals, combining Western style elements with the old tradition of woodblock printmaking. Kawano’s works are also appreciated for the way in which they incorporate the grain patterns of the woodblock into the design. Excellent, pristine, nearly immaculate over a ll vint a ge condition. Vintage Kaoru Kawano Woodblock Print Description and Item Information Up for sale is this unframed, vintage woodblock print by the Japanese artist, Kaoru Kawano. Please excuse any glare in the photos. This mid-century modern print depicts two kitty cats; one is sleeping, and the other is curled up, yet awake. The artwork is on thick paper with irregular edges. This paper measures approximately 11 3/8 inches by 17 inches. This would be a whimiscal addition to a collection of Japanese art. Verso, there is a pencil-written, “KL-20″ or K6-20. ” There also are ink-stamped markings verso, as shown, including a round chop mark and, “MADE IN JAPAN. Kaoru Kawano was active during the mid-1940s to the early 1960s. The exact age of this circa 1950s print is not known. Per Ronin Gallery, Kaoru Kawano was born in Hokkaido in 1916. He studied at the Kawabata Art School during the mid-1930s. He was active in the sosaku hanga movement, and he became internationally well-known after successful solo exhibitions in North America. His works combine Western-style elements with traditional woodblock printing techniques. Condition This print is unframed. The paper has some rippling. There is a tiny pinhole to the top margin, at the center (see views in Photos 1 and 4). There are a few creases (most noticeable example shown in Photo 8). There is slight yellowing to the white margin from previous framing. The top margin verso has residue from two strips of tape and there are slight surface losses to the bottom edge on the back side where it was previously affixed to a board for framing (see Photo 4). The edges are irregular, as made. The ink from the chop mark on the back side bled through slightly to the front (see Photo 8). Terms of Sale 1. He moved to Tokyo in 1958, and participated in international competitions and solo exhibitions in New York, Seattle, Chicago, and elsewhere.
