He was born in Oakland, California in 1879. He studied art at the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art (San Francisco), and at the Partington Art School (San Francisco). Their plan was to stay a year and work for an advertising agency creating material to promote tourism. They fell in love with the islands, and it’s people, and stayed permanently. The Kellys immediately identified with the native Hawaiians and became their champions in images and in print. John produced etchings and aquatints, primarily of human figures, though he occasionally did landscapes as well. John Melville Kelly died in Honolulu in 1962. The ones that have his signature are getting harder and harder to find. Done in his lifetime. Child and Bird by Kaoru Kawano. Vintage modernism beautiful Japanese print by Kaoru Kawano, featuring the image of a girl all in red, holding a white bird on a black background. Kawano’s red chop mark is in the lower right hand corner. Born in Hokkaido in 1916, Kawano studied at Kawabata Art School during the 1930s. He gained an international his reputation through successful solo exhibitions in North America and elsewhere. His prints frequently depict children and animals, combining Western-style elements with the tradition of woodblock printmaking. Kaoru Kawano’s works are also appreciated for the way in which they incorporate the woodgrain of the block into the design.
